Surjit Singh Sohi

It is with deep love and profound gratitude for a life well lived that we announce the passing of Brigadier Surjit Singh Sohi, who passed away at the age of 86 due to complications from pneumonia brought on by dementia.

A proud officer of the Indian Army, he served his country with honor and distinction for 34 years. Rising to the rank of Brigadier, he embodied discipline, integrity, and steadfast leadership. His years in uniform shaped him deeply, yet beneath the decorated soldier was a man of immense warmth, humility, and generosity.

After retiring from the Army, he made the courageous decision to begin anew, immigrating to the United States. In his own words, he was "starting fresh," and he embraced that chapter with vigor and optimism. He believed no work was beneath him and that dignity came from effort, not titles.

He eventually found his second calling at Willow Glen Middle School, where he worked with special education students. There, he offered patience, compassion, and quiet strength to children who needed exactly that. His service did not end with the Army; it simply took on a different form.

At home, he was the heart of the family. He is survived by his loving wife, Jagjeet; his son, Manjot; his daughter, Preet; and his beloved grandsons, Prabh and Div.

He was a devoted and doting grandfather who spoiled his grandsons endlessly, proudly picking them up from school, taking them to their games, and cheering them on with unmistakable joy. His happiest moments were spent in their company.

He loved to travel, explore new places, and savor new foods, and he had a special fondness for mango margaritas. He was friendly to strangers, generous with his time, and ready to help anyone in need, whether he knew them or not.

Though dementia gradually dimmed parts of his memory, it never erased the love he gave nor the impact he had on those around him.

He leaves behind a legacy of service, humility, resilience, and unconditional love.
