Susan Crant Carne, beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on November 15, 2025 at the age of 74. Born on April 6, 1951, in Fort Myers, Florida, Susan was the second of six daughters born to Cecil C. and Adeline M. (Doucette) Crant. She was a woman of extraordinary compassion, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to serving others.
Susan's academic journey began with her graduation from Gaylord (MI) St. Mary High School, followed by earning a Bachelor of Science from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh and a Master of Science from Utah State University. With her education as her foundation, she devoted her career to the human services field, where her work touched the lives of countless individuals and families.
Her career spanned several decades, during which she earned numerous awards for her dedication and passion for helping others. Susan began her professional journey as a Speech & Language Therapist in Green Bay, Wisconsin, before transitioning to become a Parenting Educator. She worked for 16 years with Comprehensive Interdisciplinary Developmental Services (C.I.D.S.) and later spent 11 years as a Child Advocate at Sullivan Trail Legal, Office of Attorneys for Children in Chemung County, NY. Throughout these years, Susan opened her heart and home as a foster mother, nurturing 30 children in need through Chemung County.
Susan concluded her career as a Family Specialist in Prevention with Together for Youth (formerly Berkshire Farm Services for Youth) in Saratoga County, NY, where she continued her lifelong mission of serving children and families in need.
In addition to her professional achievements, Susan was deeply involved in her community and church. For nine years, she taught religious education to children at St. Mary Our Mother Parish in Horseheads, NY. She served on several boards in Chemung County, including 25 years with Strong Kids / Safe Kids and 6 years on the Horseheads School Board. Most recently, Susan took great pride in serving on the board of the Mechanicville Stillwater Little League, where she helped nurture the next generation of young athletes.
Above all, Susan's greatest joy came from her family. She is survived by her five children, who were the center of her universe: Christopher Crant Carne (Karlye) of
Sarasota, FL, Adam Crant Carne (Katie) of Corning, NY, Eric Crant Carne of Stillwater, NY, Patrick Crant Carne (Lindsey) of North Port, FL, and Tianna Crant Carne of Elmira, NY. She was also the proud grandmother of seven beloved grandchildren: Alivia Argentieri, Brennan and Christianna Crant Carne, Cecelia and Claire Carne, and Parker and Carter Carne. Susan also leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews, each of whom she cherished deeply.
Susan's life was enriched by her deep bonds with her four sisters: Caren Caye Wagoner (Sandy, UT), Betty-Jo Crant-Smith (Altamonte Springs, FL), Melody Carey (Michael, Traverse City, MI), and Daphne Beringer (Walter, Traverse City, MI), who were her unwavering support system through the years. Together, they shared not only a love for each other but also the kind of laughter that kept their spirits high and their hearts full.
Susan's circle of lifelong friends was equally treasured. Her three best friends-Debbie Hadley-Johnson, Pat Richardson Krauss, and Maureen LoPresto-brought joy, laughter, and love into her life, making each day brighter. Their bond will live on in the memories they shared, and the laughter will continue until they meet again.
Susan was a woman whose life's work was defined by the love she gave, the children she helped, and the communities she strengthened. Her legacy will forever live on in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing her.
A memorial service to honor Susan's life will be held at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church,
