Susan A Pekol
Born: August 18, 1957 in Joliet, Illinois
Died: November 15, 2025 in Joliet, Illinois
Susan "Sue" A. (Waznis) Pekol, age 68, passed away peacefully on November 15, 2025, surrounded by family.
Preceded in death by her parents, Judith (Dobbs) and Stanley Waznis, whose memory she cherished throughout her life.
Beloved husband of 50 years to Leonard Pekol; sister to Stanley (Lucia) Waznis, Jr., and Steve (Cheryl) Waznis; devoted mother of Scott (Jeana) Pekol and Sean Pekol; proud "Queenie" to twin grandchildren Luke and Zach Pekol, cherished aunt to Matthew, Kyle, and Shannon Waznis and Bobby Pekol; and lifelong best friend to Lois Dobbs.
Sue was born on August 18, 1957, in Joliet, Illinois. She attended Saint Jude Catholic Grade School and proudly graduated from Joliet West High School, class of '75. Sue had a wonderful circle of high school friends and continued to celebrate birthdays and special occasions with them for many years after graduation.
After high school, she dedicated herself to helping her husband run the family restaurant, Syl's, where she was known for her warm smile, attention to detail, and hardworking spirit. Sue's hospitality extended far beyond the restaurant industry. Everyone who knew Sue felt the kindness, warmth, and genuine care she shared for those around her.
When she was not in Joliet, Sue could often be found in Fort Myers Beach, Florida, a place many would say was her second home. For more than 40 years, she walked the entire seven-mile beach, collected shells, watched the dolphins play in the surf, and enjoyed the island's cherished restaurants. Fort Myers Beach was her treasured retreat, where she found joy in hosting vacations and creating memories with family and friends.
Sue enjoyed going on long walks throughout Joliet and was an avid reader. Her faith was central to her life, and she was a regular presence at the Cathedral of St. Raymond Nonnatus in Joliet. She was a devoted fan, finding immense joy in attending her sons' and grandsons' sporting events. Known affectionately as Queenie to her grandsons and their friends, Sue never missed an opportunity to support them at their athletic competitions, tournaments, and school events. She treated her sons' and grandsons' friends as if they were her own children, offering them unconditional support and love.
Sue's steadfast joy and compassion for others will resonate with her family and friends forever. Her presence will be missed dearly, and her memory will continue to inspire and uplift all who knew and loved her.
A gathering to celebrate Sue's life will take place on Saturday, November 22, 2025, from 4:00 PM- 7:00 PM at Cemeno's Pizza, 1630 Essington Road, Joliet. We invite all family and friends to come together to honor the extraordinary legacy she leaves behind.
In lieu of flowers, donations in her name to The
Alzheimer's Association Greater Illinois Chapter would be greatly appreciated.
