Obituary published on Legacy.com by Faries Funeral Directors and Crematorium, Inc. on Nov. 13, 2025.
Susan Patricia Wick, born January 16, 1960, in Riverhead, New York, was the daughter of Joseph Wick and Patricia Warner Wick. The family relocated to Delaware in September 1972 before settling in Smyrna. Susan graduated from Holy Cross High School in Dover in 1977. She attended High Point University for two years and later completed her degree in Plant Science at the University of Delaware in 1981.
Susan devoted her life to the family business, Joseph Wick Nurseries, where she worked throughout her entire career. Her love and passion for plants began in childhood with her grandparents, Joseph and Violet Wick, who owned a florist shop on Long Island. Susan and her grandfather spent countless hours working side by side in the greenhouse, where he patiently taught her propagation techniques from rooting cuttings to grafting and budding a wide variety of plants. These early lessons shaped not only her skills but also her lifelong dedication to horticulture. Following her father's illness in 1994, she and her brother assumed leadership of the nursery. During this time, she also naturally grew into the role of matriarch, offering guidance, support, and a steadfast presence to her loved ones. Selfless by nature, Susan was always ready to help her friends, family, and the wider community.
Her lifelong love of horses began in childhood on Long Island, when her parents made what they jokingly called the "expensive mistake" of treating their two eldest daughters to a pony ride. That small moment sparked a passion that led to a successful career in pony and warmblood breeding. She cherished being a mother, not only to her own children but also as a second mother to many of her children's friends.
Although she had three children of her own, Susan always dreamed of more children. When she met the love of her life, Rene DeJesus, that dream blossomed into reality. She welcomed his children and grandchildren with open arms, embracing each of them as her own. Susan loved nothing more than hosting large family gatherings. This involved carefully planning extensive menus and ensuring no one ever left her home hungry. Her joy of cooking and entertaining inspired the creation of a family cookbook, Wick Fix, a collection of beloved recipes treasured through the years.
Susan was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by the love of her life, Rene DeJesus; her children Lauren Sauble (Justin), Michael Preskenis, and Christopher Preskenis; the father of her children, John Preskenis; her extended children Rene DeJesus (Yesenia), Michael DeJesus (Katheryn), Jerry DeJesus (Iris), Tania DeJesus, Layla Reeves, Lemya Pownall (Alex), and Marisa Reeves; and her grandchildren Alexander, Jerenmy, Jeimy, Hilda, Alexia, Erick, Jerrianys, Nayely, Noel, Aitanna, Lillian, Logan, John, and Miles. She is also survived by her siblings Carol Wick, Patricia Simpson (Mitch), Jennifer Cassidy (Timothy), and Joseph Wick (Christine); her goddaughter Stella Cassidy; nieces and nephew, Patricia, Grace, Mitch, Kimberly, Anna, Nora and Sydney; her beloved dogs Delilah, Charlotte, and Coco; and her dear friends Shirlyn Lowman, William Burris, Sheila & Brian Holleger, Klaus & Jessica Schengber, Debbie Mulholland, Hector Febus, and Maritza Miranda Rosario.
