Susan (Suzy Q) Wielins passed away peacefully at her home in
Gig Harbor, Washington on February 18th, 2026. Some of her final moments were spent cheering on her beloved Florida Gators. She was 75.
Born October 4th, 1950, to Leona Mae and Marvin Ralph Cheever in
Topeka, Kansas, Susan was the dutiful eldest daughter and grew up alongside two brothers (Norman and David) and two sisters (Christina and Carol). The family moved from Kansas to Illinois and eventually settled in Phoenix, Arizona.
Susan was a beautiful and kind young woman when she met Paul Wielins, and the pair quickly married and set off to start a new life together. Dana was born in 1974, and they spent many years in Colorado as a family of three before relocating back to Florida to be near Paul's family. The rest of the children came along in quick succession starting in 1985, with Derek, Sarah, and Michael rounding out their family of six.
Susan had a special and unique relationship with each of her children, who shared different chapters and memories with their mom. Above all, she was a devoted mother who always put her children first, often above her own needs. Despite many trials and hardships throughout her life, she offered steady love, support, and encouragement to everyone she encountered. She believed deeply in the power of prayer.
Those who knew Susan will remember her bright smile, love for Jesus, beautiful singing voice, and that she was a proud Gator Mom. After residing 30+ years in Florida, Grammy Sue happily relocated to Gig Harbor in 2021 to be closer to her daughter and granddaughter. She moved to the Holiday Peninsula senior living community and quickly blossomed into a new version of herself. She led others in worship at Sunday morning chapel services, attended bible studies, book clubs, played bean bag baseball, and was a featured soloist with her singing group, the "Peninsula Singers." She was known to look out for and welcome new residents into the community.
Susan was preceded in death by her beloved son, Derek, who passed away in 2011 at the age of 25. She missed him desperately and longed to be reunited in heaven one day. She was able to harness her grief and understanding of loss to encourage and counsel other women who had lost a child. Her kind spirit, warmth, and compassion will be deeply missed.
Susan will be lovingly remembered by her kids, Dana (and daughter-in-law, Robin); Sarah (and granddaughter, Calla); and Michael (and grandson, Derek). She is also survived by her four siblings, several nieces and nephews, her church family, and countless friends - both old and new.
A memorial service will be held at the Holiday Peninsula retirement home, where Suzy Q lived, on Saturday, April 4th, 2026, at 3pm. Friends and family are invited to join in celebration of Suzy's life at Sarah's home in Gig Harbor afterward.
