In memory of
Mike Tate
June 30, 2018
I was a teammate and classmate of Suttons in 2001-02 at Duke University. It has been 11 years since his passing and I still struggle with the fact hes not here.
Sutton epitomized friendship, class, and professionalism. He was a great friend and classmate. We spent hours studying together at Duke. And I spent countless hours talking to him about life and career advice. We watched the 2001 Duke national championship basketball game together and had a great time!
Sutton always had a kind word to say to everyone. He was supportive of all his classmates and was admired by all.
May you Rest In Peace my good friend. You are an inspiration to me and others. You will always be in my thoughts. Until we meet again....

Beth, I was a teammate and classmate of Sutton's at Duke in 2001-2. We spent many hours studying and attending classes and cheering on the national champion Blue Devils together, and I knew how much he cared for you and his family. He was always positive, always quick with a smile for everyone, always eager to help a classmate or a friend. Funny and charitable and kind. Very, very kind. I know that much time has passed but I wanted to express my condolences as soon as I heard the news today. I'm so sorry for your loss.

Dear Baldwin Family:
I was so sorry to recently learn of Sutton's passing. I was a basketball teammate of his at Hampden-Sydney during the 1983-84 season. He was a terrific teammate and wonderful person. If I had questions about my coursework, he would gladly explain the material to me.
I am very sorry for your loss.
God bless you.

I am a distant cousin of Sutton's and I was truly sorry to read about his death. I probably met him way back in 1973 when we were both children. His Mom ("Cousin LeLe") visited Reedville and there was a family reunion of sorts. Anyway, she was one unforgettable character and I can see from the large outpouring of condolences that Sutton likewise touched many lives. I am the late R. Bertrand Jett's grand-daughter and I believe my Grandfather and Mrs. Baldwin were first or second cousins. I am so sorry for your loss. I know you will comfort one another with your many memories of him.

Beth,
I am so sorry for your loss. You have never met me. I was Sutton's roommate at Hampden-Sydney for four years. He was one of the smartest people I have ever known, articulate, witty, well-versed in any subject, a great athlete, a man with an uncanny knack to get to the most basic truth in any situation, a true philosopher, a Great Man.
One of the few people I have known with worse handwriting than mine, Sutton preferred to print. I remember he showed up the first day of school toting only a paper grocery bag of clothes and a basketball. Inheriting his mother's love of music, Sutton had a beautiful, deep bass voice. He appreciated all good music but loved James Taylor best of all. He was a natural leader, loved by everyone who knew him. He ate lots of Little Debbie snack cakes and Entenmann's but never gained an ounce, and drank Tab (Diet Pepsi and Fresca were our only other diet drinks back then; he preferred Tab), and hated it when I opened up a can of sardines or tuna. He shared my Libertarian views, but he also liked Doonsbury. Sutton was a great carpenter, too. He rigged us up some illegal extra electrical circuits (which worked perfectly) and built a bunk bed that you could have put a truck on in our dorm room. We lost touch after my Internship in 1989. The world is poorer for his absence.
Pete, although I have never faced it myself, I know that losing a child is the worst thing a parent can endure, a perversion of God's natural order, a blasphemy. Know that your middle son was a brother to me, and I grieve his untimely passing. I was truly blessed to have known Sutton. I am sorry for your loss.
Steve, Mark, Blair, Bee, and Whit, I don't quite know what to say. Sutton was your brother, meaning at once the same to you all yet something different and special to each one of you. For me, Sutton was one of those critically important people that you meet as you grow through life, a man of incredible intelligence and presence, a fellow student, a teacher, a student of life. He helped me grow. I loved him and will miss him, as I know you all will.
Timmy and Josh, the last time I saw you two, I think you were both in diapers. Laura Lee, I have never met you. Understand that your dad was one of the finest men to have ever lived. I know he loved you all. Remember what he taught you. Honor his memory.
My family and I will keep all of you in our prayers.

Beth, Tim, Josh, Laura Lee, Blair and Whit: It was such a shock to all of us in HR at work to lose such a vibrant leader. He really did always have a smile and always would first ask "how are you" - but he really wanted to know how you were doing! I will really miss him. I am so sorry for the great amount of grief you are feeling. Thank you for sharing so much with us during the memorial service. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

As a young boy growing up, as a member of the Baldwin family, I will never forget the great presence Sutton brought to all of our family gatherings. I will remember him as the cousin who was always so happy in addition to a man who loved his wife and kids. What a great man he was to all of us. You all are in my thoughts during this very difficult time. May peace and love be with you.

Sutton was one of the finest guys I knew at Hampden-Sydney. He was always willing to help out whenever anyone couldn't figure out something (in most every subject). What I remember most, however, were the laughs with Sutton. I'm confident your memories will be good ones. And, my thoughts and prayers are with you and the rest of Sutton's family.

To Sutton's family and friends:
Like others who have expressed their sympathies, I was a classmate of Sutton's at Hampden-Sydney. He was respected by his peers for his many talents, not the least of which was his keen sense of humor. He was a natural leader whose opinion was always valued. He will be missed, of course, but fondly remembered by those of us who knew him at HSC. I hope you are comforted in knowing that Sutton left a lasting and positive impression on so many of his classmates.

Boys, we are sorry to have missed you this evening. Kathy was one of your babysitters in Covington many years ago. Our children are Ryan, Karl, Krista and Ross. We were so sad to hear the news of your father's untimely passing. We really do hope you will contact us this summer while you are in Richmond. We want to see you again. It was an honor to have know your father and to have been blessed with your presence in Covington. I kept in touch with Sutton when he transferred to Richmond. We even had lunch together a couple years ago, and he spoke highly of you and was so proud of the fine young men you have grown to become. We will all miss him here on Earth, but heaven will be blessed with his spirit.

Beth:
I worked with and for Sutton for many years. His sharp intelligence and sense of the absurd were remarkable. It was a privilege to have known him and to have seen him grow up over these 22 or so years. I always valued his counsel. As a second soprano, I sat in front of the men in the Allghenay Highlands Chorale and often had the pleasure of listening to Sutton's wonderful voice as we rehearsed and performed.
He loved you very much and you and Laura Lee were constantly on his mind. The last time I saw him was Valentine's Day, and we spent several happy minutes looking at his elaborate display of family pictures before getting to the business at hand. As they often said the the old days of one who was taken too soon, "God loves a shining mark."

To a Beautiful Family,
A wonderful husband, brother, son, father, and friend is gone, but the beauty of Sutton's life continues. He put joy, jokes, and effort into all he did, and all because of you. Sutton shared and reflected the tenderness and happiness found in your multi-faceted family. His love is your love, and that's forever. Remember his care and devotion to what mattered, and the goodness that was Sutton lasts.
Peace, prayers, blessings, and love to you now and always.
