Sybil King Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Whitehurst-Powell Funeral Home & Crematory on Feb. 24, 2026.
Sybil Irene King passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Saturday, February 21, 2026, at the age of 98. She was born on June 23, 1927, in Eye, England, to Tom and Emily Mills. During her life, Sybil served in the British Navy, taught pre-school, owned the King Tastee Freez restaurants in DeFuniak Springs and in Crestview, and ran the culinary department at NWFSC (OWCC).

Sybil was known for her culinary skills which she generously shared with her family and friends, especially roast beef, Yorkshire Pudding, sausage rolls, and mincemeat tarts. While she was a proper English lady who enjoyed her teatime, she would also revel in beating any opponent at her favorite game, Scrabble. All who knew her appreciated her great sense of humor. Married to Hugo King for 64 years, she had to adapt from her life in the British Navy to life as an Air Force wife. She served as a strong role model of resiliency for family as she related stories of living through WWII.

Sybil is survived by her devoted children: her daughter, Dr. Jennifer Currid of Crestview and her son John King of Pensacola. Sybil deeply loved her granddaughter Heather Bien (Brad), her grandson Derek King, and great granddaughter Emily Bien, all who will miss their "Nannie."

Sybil was preceded in death by her husband Hugo King, her parents Tom and Emily Mills, and her twelve siblings.

Sybil was a loyal and founding member of the Church of Epiphany, Crestview, where her funeral service will be held on Thursday, February 26, 2026, at 10:00am with the visitation starting at 9:15am. Burial will follow at Liveoak Park Memorial Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations in Sybil's memory to Church of Epiphany, 424 Garden Street, Crestview, FL 32536.

Sybil's family is most appreciative for the gentle care she received from the staff at Silvercrest and the compassionate support of Vitas hospice services.

Arrangements are entrusted to Whitehurst Powell Funeral Home in Crestview. Guest book and condolences are available online at www.whitehurstpowellfuneralhome.com
