Sylvester Earl Guszregan ---- a unique one-of-a-kind name for a unique one-of-a-kind man. He was a son, big brother and father, but having him as a friend carried as much weight as blood relative.
He was born on January 12, 1954, the first of four children. He took the position of eldest and forged the trail for his younger siblings, which at times was quite precarious and dangerous.
He marched to the beat of his own drum and was known for his big laugh (we will so miss his squeal and laugh), big mustache, and he had a heart so big that it couldn’t be measured. He truly would give you his last dime or the shirt off his back.
The Man, The Myth, The Legend
It is said, a cat has nine lives. He had more.
Just to share a few 1) almost drowned in a whirlpool in a creek, but was rescued by Dad 2) he was hit by a drunk driver while riding his bike to a fireworks stand 3) he was tracking a polar bear and as he went over a knoll, he found the polar bear had turned around and was coming after him 4) he was scuba diving and when he turned around, an orca was right behind him and he looked him in the eye 5) while working on a rig he got doused with a chemical that displaces oxygen. He tried to run into the wind, but he turned blue and went down. Someone gave him a mask and he survived.
He was an oilman. He started out working the local fields, went to Louisiana and worked off shore rigs and then headed north for Alaska, his home of 35 years. From working in the oil rigs, he became extremely hard of hearing, and hearing aids did not work well with him. But, with his loss of hearing, it allowed him to connect closely to himself, with his grand circle of family and friends, with his surroundings and most of all with his Lord and Savior.
Then came the artist. He created stunning, beautiful pieces from wood and stones - bowls of every shape and size, lamps, goblets and urns. If you are so lucky to have one of his creations, hold it close. He began by letting the wood speak to him to see what it could become and then put his whole heart into his creations.
He passed away on December 29, 2025. Loved ones who passed before him are his Mom & Dad (Earl and Joyce Guszregan) and his two sons, Shane Guszregan & Ian Zimmerman. His tales and memories will be remembered and told by many, including his children Kandy Fleurisma, Meghan Mackey & Elizabeth Guszregan; grandchildren Paayton & Tryston Fleurisma, Noelle Wright & Ember Mackey, and Remi Miller & Killian Woodruff; siblings Dan & Teri Guszregan, Peggy Guszregan & Roger Sveum and Julie & Jeff Buchman; and his many nieces and nephews.
There will be a Celebration of Life on May 17, 2026, in Sweetgrass, MT at the Glocca Morra and one in Helena, MT. Full details will follow.
