Sylvia Griffith

Sylvia Griffith, born in Panna Maria on August 3, 1922, passed away on August 9, 2018. She left Panna Maria in 1944 and moved to San Antonio, where she obtained an associate business degree. Upon completion she worked for Alamo Title Company. In San Antonio, she met her beloved husband, Walter R. Griffith, and they wed on January 6, 1947. They left San Antonio for College Station, where Walter completed his Engineering Degree from Texas A&M. They eventually settled in San Antonio, where she worked for San Antonio Parks & Recreation for many years. Sylvia was actively involved in numerous societies in San Antonio, including the Ladies Auxiliary for Professional Engineers, League of Women Voters, and was a founding member of the San Antonio A&M Wives' Club (now the San Antonio Aggie Women's Club). She also served as an Election Judge for the city for over 20 years. Sylvia never lost sight of her faith and Polish heritage. She loved playing the piano and singing with the Polish choir which performed throughout San Antonio as well as for Saint Pope John Paul II's visit to San Antonio and Panna Maria. Throughout her life she maintained her ties to the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church in Panna Maria. Sylvia and her husband were founding members of St. Gregory the Great and St. Matthew's Catholic Churches in San Antonio. She is survived by her brother, Leon Gawlik; her children, Gary L. Griffith and wife Shari, Gregory D. Griffith, and Linda G. Speights. She is also survived by grandchildren, Anna Lovoi, Chad Griffith, Michael Marshall, Sarah Speights, Benjamin Griffith, Isabelle Griffith and Bianca Griffith; and great-grandchildren; Keira Griffith, Kaylee Griffith, Kaden Griffith and Jocelyn Lovoi. Visitation will be on Wednesday, August 15, 2018 from 6:00pm to 7:00pm at Porter Loring North on 1604.
