Sylvia Ballard Huete, born on December 30, 1934, in Ft. Worth, Texas, passed away peacefully on October 30, 2025, in New Orleans, Louisiana. A woman of remarkable talents and passion, Sylvia dedicated her professional life to education and law while also cherishing the fine arts.
Throughout the 1960s, Sylvia made significant contributions to her community, working at Kingsley House, which is now known as Clover House. She played a pivotal role in running Camp Onward in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi, fostering growth and development in the youth she served. Her commitment to education extended further as she became an Academic Affairs Officer at Dillard University, where she was also a beloved professor. In addition, Sylvia shared her knowledge by tutoring at Tulane University Medical School and served as a partner at Normand Williams, and Ballard Law Offices, forging a path for many who followed.
Sylvia’s academic achievements were a testament to her dedication and intellect. She held a PhD in Humanities from the University of Southern Mississippi and earned her Juris Doctorate from Loyola University. Her academic pursuits were matched only by her love for the fine arts. An accomplished painter, she expressed her creativity and passion through her artwork, bringing beauty to the world around her. Furthermore, she enjoyed the camaraderie of a Gourmet Club, sharing her love for fine dining and culinary arts with fellow enthusiasts.
Sylvia is survived by her cherished daughter, Mary Sue Milton (partner Jerry Steen). The warmth and wisdom she imparted will continue to resonate with those who knew and loved her.
A visitation in honor of Sylvia will be held at Riemann Family Funeral Home in Pass Christian, Mississippi, on November 4, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM. As friends and family come together to celebrate her life, they will remember her not just for her numerous accomplishments but for her kind spirit and vibrant passion for life.
