Sylvia D. Betz Schurr of Eustis passed away Saturday, July 6, 2024 at Elwood Care Center at the age of 88. Sylvia was born July 15, 1935 at Eustis, Nebraska to Herman and Erna (Fiene) Hablitzel. She graduated from Eustis High School with the class of 1953. Sylvia married Walter Betz on August 14, 1954 in Raton, New Mexico. Their union was blessed with two daughters, Annette and Joyce.
Sylvia taught country school, owned 3 restaurants, was the bookkeeper for the Eustis Coop Creamery and was an Amway direct distributor. She was instrumental in the start of the Eustis Senior Center and was the director until her retirement.
Sylvia married LaRaye Schurr on July 19, 2014 at Eustis, Nebraska. She gained 3 step children, Sherry, Glenda and Arlo.
Sylvia loved to sew and made many quilts for the whole family, but especially for the babies. She enjoyed square dancing, gardening, jigsaw puzzles and word searches. Her most treasured times were spent with her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Sylvia is lovingly survived by her husband, LaRaye; children, Annette (George) Wolfe of Columbus, Joyce Cote of Cozad, Sherry (Lee) Hueftle of Eustis, Glenda (Mike) Naughtin of Grand Island and Arlo (Lisa) Schurr of Eustis; grandchildren, Jenifer (Dan) Klingelhoefer of Spendora, TX, Danyel (Kevin) Olmer of Columbus, Nicholas (Cristin) Wolfe of Cozad, Adam (Kassie) Cote of Salina, KS, Jared (Cassie) Cote of Lincoln, Steven (Elizabeth) Cote of Cozad, Mariah Cote of Denver, CO, Kristine (Dell) Moninger of Broken Bow, Kara (Brett) Herrman of Colby, KS, Kevan (Nicole) Hueftle of Eustis, Elise Fite of Kansas City, MO, Michaela Sewalson of Kansas City, MO, Tyler (Kayelon) Schurr of Eustis, Miranda (Bryan) Weitzenkamp of Columbus, Ashley Pleschourt of SD, Alex (Alex) Ayers of Central City, Sara (Trenton) Beckmann of Ulysses, and Spencer (Jercey) Pleschourt of Cozad; 35 great grandchildren; brother, L. Keith (Pam) VonHall of Jasper, FL; sisters, NoElla Snow of Hastings, Nina Whitcomb of North Platte; sisters-in-law, Kathy (Vince) Muñiz of Papillion, and Mary (Bruce) Bakke of Garfield, AR.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Walter; son-in-law, Meddie Cote; great great granddaughter, Ryken Lea Wolfe; brothers-in-law, Leonard Snow, Jack Whitcomb, Bill Betz and Calvin Owen; sisters-in-law, Bonnie Betz, and Carolyn Schurr; and great great granddaughter, Opal Grace Schurr.
Online condolences may be shared at berrymanfuneralhome.com. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Elwood Care Center or Eustis Senior Center. Funeral Services will be held Thursday, July 11, 2024 at 10:30 a.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church with Pastor Kathy Gundell officiating. Burial will follow at East Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday from 5 to 7 p.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church. Berryman Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements.
