Sylvia Sharp Obituary

Sylvia Sutton Sharp

Jan 5, 1938 - Jan 3, 2026

West Valley City/Magna, Utah - Sylvia Sutton Sharp, age 87, passed away peacefully on January 3, 2026, in her home, surrounded by family she cherished deeply.

Sylvia was born on January 5, 1938, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Metta Marie Sutton and Grant Reid Sutton. On March 6, 1959, she married the love of her life, William H. "Hal" Sharp, in the Salt Lake City Temple, beginning a devoted marriage of 67 years.

Sylvia lived life fully, joyfully, and with remarkable purpose. She was a proud and lifelong champion of her beloved Magna community, where she was a familiar face, a trusted friend, and a passionate advocate for its history and people. She proudly sold "I Love Magna" t-shirts for the Magna Museum, served as Grand Marshal of the Magna Fourth of July Parade in 2022, and was inducted into the Cyprus High School Hall of Fame in 2023.

A gifted writer, Sylvia penned a weekly column in The Magna Times titled "Why I Love Magna," signing each piece with her signature phrase, "as Syl sees it." Her love for people was evident in everything she did - from working as a phone operator at BTS ("getting paid to talk to people," as she liked to say) to volunteering with the Daughters of Utah Pioneers and the special needs mutual, which was her most cherished service.

Sylvia served faithfully in many leadership roles within The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, including Stake Relief Society President, Ward Relief Society President, and Stake Young Women's leader, but her heart was always drawn to serving those with special needs.

Active and adventurous, Sylvia completed a marathon in St. George in 1994, loved water aerobics, walking, writing, acting, and was known as a true social butterfly. When she moved from her treasured Jean Street in Magna to Hunter Villas in 2011, she quickly built a new community - even starting the water aerobics program there herself.

Above all else, Sylvia's greatest joy was her family, lovingly referred to as "her treasures." Whenever her family gathered, she would say, "This is my idea of heaven." She expressed her creativity through poetry, often writing a poem each year on her birthday. As her time drew near, her words reflected her faith and grace: "87 on my way to heaven." And fittingly, with her birthday just days later, "88 now I'm at the gate."

To know Sylvia was to truly, deeply love her. She showed up with unwavering acceptance, passion, and kindness, and her presence made people feel seen and valued.

Sylvia is survived by her beloved husband, Hal Sharp; her four daughters, Suzie Murray, Shelly (Jim) Hansen, Kim (Dennis) Bell, and Jennifer (TC) Raley; two granddaughters she lovingly raised as her own; 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; her treasured Golden Girls; her community; and her church family.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother Leland Sutton; her son-in-law Brent Murray; the cherished Jean Street Crew; and many dearly loved friends and family.
