Tamra “Tami” Dawn Payne, 62, of South Bend bravely fought until her passing on Monday, March 23, 2026, with family by her side. She was born in Okmulgee, OK on September 5, 1963, to the late Bob Payne and Jeannie (Visser) O’Dell.

Tami never married but found her family to be her biggest blessing. She is survived by her best friend, Jay Brendle and his son Karma, who was Tami’s godson and center of her heart, her brothers, Tim (Christin) Moore of South Bend, and Jeff (Pam) Payne of S. Carolina; their children, Timmy and Libby Moore, and Megan, Hailey, and Spencer Payne. A close personal friend, Beth Ann Felisch, and children Ami Lou, Lindsay, and Bobi Jane, and close cousins Buddy and Terry Visser of Preston, OK.

Tami was a gifted chef and creative spirit who found joy in serving others, but her talents extended far beyond the kitchen. She was known for crafting stunning fruit baskets carved entirely from fresh produce and for her awe-inspiring Halloween jack-o’-lanterns. Her creativity also showed up in the thoughtful, handmade gifts she lovingly prepared for family and friends during the holidays. Her heart for others was evident not only in her professional life, serving as a chef at the Indiana Recovery Center in Mishawaka, but also in the way she opened her own home to care for others. Tami compassionately welcomed hospice patients, providing comfort and dignity as a caregiver to those in need. Tami was proud of her Cherokee heritage and embraced life with enthusiasm, especially through floating whatever creek or river she came across and her love of music. She attended over 45 Motley Crue concerts alongside family and friends, creating memories that will be cherished for years to come. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

Cremation has taken place with no formal services scheduled at this time. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to The Trevor Project, Ali Forney Center, or The Matthew Shepherd Fund. Tami dedicated her life to support to LGBT community.
