Tarit Banerjee Obituary

Published by Legacy on Jul. 31, 2025.
Tarit K Banerjee, MD (1939-2025) Tarit K Banerjee, 86, of North Oaks, MN peacefully passed away on July 27, 2025. Tarit was loved for his kindness, gentle nature, and genuine interest in others. He also had a great sense of humor. When telling jokes, he enjoyed others' amusement nearly as much as his own. Tarit was born in Kolkata, India. He was the youngest of four brothers and the last surviving sibling. He went to Calcutta National Medical College, graduated as a doctor of medicine and immigrated to the United States in 1964. He trained in Cleveland, OH and specialized in oncology in Buffalo, NY . He left the U.S. briefly due to changes in immigration law and worked in Edmonton, AB Canada. From Canada, he transferred to Marshfield Clinic and Research Foundation in Marshfield WI, which was his workplace for over 35 years until he retired from clinical practice in 2004 and from clinical research in 2008. When Tarit first began practicing in the area of oncology, there were limited cancer treatments and high mortality. Tarit was passionate about research since he felt strongly that it was foundational to improving care and reducing mortality. Tarit's professional joy was the Community Clinical Oncology Program at the Marshfield Clinic. The National Cancer Institute sponsored cooperative group clinical trials, and Marshfield Clinic was one of the top contributors of patients. Before his retirement, he was the principal investigator of a grant renewal for $4.6 million over five years. In 2013, he moved to Minnesota and enjoyed spending time in nature, especially with his family. Tarit loved animals, especially birds. He was an avid gardener, proudly growing beautiful vegetables and flowers. He was a world traveller. Tarit Banerjee is survived by his two daughters, Mimi Mukherjee and Riki Banerjee; his son-in-laws Shubu Mukherjee and Steven Goetz, and his grandchildren, Rianna and Ryone Mukherjee. If you wish to consider a gift, donations in his memory to the American Cancer Society, National Public Radio, or the Audubon Society are welcome. These are all organizations that were near and dear to his heart.
