Ted Cahoon Obituary

Ted R. Cahoon

1939 ~ 2023

One of the last real cowboys, our beloved husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, Theodore Robin Cahoon, rode into his final sunset on Sunday, October 15, 2023, at the age of 83.

Ted was born on December 7, 1939, in Woods Cross, Utah, the fourth of seven children to Stephen Lee Roy Cahoon and Mildred Grace Harris. He was named after President Theodore Roosevelt and a character from a novel that his mother liked whose name was Robin. By all accounts, particularly his own, Ted lived a rambunctious young life filled with adventures and hard work.

He graduated in the Class of 1958 from Bountiful High School in Bountiful, Utah, where he was on the track team, then he studied agriculture science at Utah State University in Logan, Utah. Ted married the cute redhead, Penny June Gunderson, who had caught his eye back in high school. They were sealed a few years later in the Salt Lake Temple. Together they raised four children in Woods Cross, Utah.

Like any cowboy worth their salt, Ted hated to let daylight go to waste. He took pride in working from dawn until dusk and passed that work ethic on to his children by celebrating holidays with hard labor projects around the farm. It was incredibly frustrating for Ted to not be able to get out to do chores and projects himself anymore, but he would proudly tell people that he had "worn out, not rusted out."

Ted had a long and successful career at Monroc, a ready mix concrete and asphalt company on Beck Street in Salt Lake City, where he worked his way up from dispatch to a corner office. "If you're going to go to work," he'd say, "you might as well be the boss." He eventually retired from Monroc so he could do what he loved full time - being a cattle rancher.

Ted will be greatly missed by his wife, Penny; children, Pam, Shanna (Bart), Joe and Robin (Aaron); his grandchildren, Daniel (Torey), Samantha (Moises), Jared, Mary (Jordan), Garret (Bonnie), Millie (Paul), Michaela (Pearce), Savannah (Jason), Izzy, JT, Jenna and Grace; and his great grandchildren, Theo, Layla, Emili, Mia, Elliot, Mack and Monroe. Ted is also survived by his sisters, Becky and Cathey. He was preceded in death by an infant daughter named Rachel, his mother, father, brothers, Jim, Kenny, Pete and his sister Marylyn.

Ted was an active member of The Church of Jesus Chris of Latter-day Saints and held many callings including scout leader, Sunday school teacher, counselor in the ward bishopric, ward bishop and stake high councilor. If he wasn't at work or with the cows, you could usually find Ted at the church or supporting any number of church activities like river trips, girl's camp, hay rides, parties in his backyard and more.

A viewing will be held on Sunday, October 22, 2023, from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at Russon Mortuary, 295 N. Main Street in Bountiful, Utah. On Monday, October 23, 2023, a viewing will be held from 9:45-10:45 a.m., with funeral services following at 11:00 a.m., at the LDS Chapel at 2064 S. 800 W. in Woods Cross, Utah. Ted will be laid to rest following the service at the Bountiful City Cemetery at 2224 S. 200 W. in Bountiful, Utah.

Friends and family may gather and visit to share memories of Ted at a reception following the graveside services. Ted's care is under the direction of Russon Mortuary. Flowers may be sent to Russon Mortuary, 295 N. Main Street in Bountiful, 84010.

The family would like to express their gratitude to the family and friends who visited Ted regularly - in person and on the phone. Those visits were the best part of his day and gave him something to look forward to. They would also like to thank the end-of-life healthcare professionals for the comfort and support they provided to Ted and the family these past few weeks.
