Our beloved Mother, TEODOLA MIAGA MAUSISA, was born on March 23, 1928 in Merida, Leyte, Philippines. She was the 7th among 8 children, 6 girls and 2 boys of Tomas and Mercedes Miaga. Mama came from humble beginnings, her father was a fisherman and her mother a homemaker, who constantly struggle to make both ends meet. To ease her family's burden, Mama helped her parents earn a living at an early age by harvesting rice and corn. She attended high school in International Harvardian University where she has shown her love for dancing, singing and where she developed her skills as an engaging storyteller, a dressmaker, and a good cook. Coupled with her hard work, these skills came in handy and have blessed our family during Mama's almost 93 years of earthly life.
During WWII from 1941-1944, our Mom and her family fled to the mountains of Leyte. After the war, our Mom stayed with her older sister in Davao City where she was introduced to Hochon Tan, who then became her husband. They were blessed with 3 children namely: Ramie, the oldest, Inday Tita and Dearie. Things went well for them because our Mom and their father owned a retail and wholesale store which was a fitting business for the couple with Hochon's entrepreneurial skills and our Mom's beautiful countenance, friendly nature, and excellent conversationalist that win customers over. Our Mom likewise learned to speak Chinese which helped their business grow even more as they were able to cater to both Filipinos and Chinese clientele. Unfortunately, their father died and my Mom became a widow in her early 30s.
Before long though, our beautiful Mom met Crisostomo Mausisa, who was then a Supervisor for the Philippine Long Distance Telephone (PLDT) Co. in Davao City. He was a WWII Filipino Veteran who fought "side-by-side" with the American soldiers against the Japanese. Their union blessed them with two sons, Robert in 1964 and Richard the following year.
In the 70s, we became members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (except for Ramie). With our newfound faith, Mom's life onward then became filled with Church callings, family activities, and supporting our father raised all of us five children especially when our family moved to Quezon City in the 80s. Our father was called as the Branch President of the Don Antonio Branch, Quezon City District and served as a Manila Temple Sealer as well. As a true disciplinarian, our Mom would always see to it that her kids are obedient, follow the house rules and God-fearing. She trained us to work hard. Our mother was frugal - she knew how to get the best deals (cheaper ones) so she could stretch her peso. She stressed on saving for the future and taught us how to live within our means.
In 1990, our family was sealed in the Manila Philippines Temple as an eternal family. It was also in the same year that the US 42nd President, Pres George H.W. Bush granted US Citizenship privileges to WWII Filipino Veterans which our father availed of.
In June 17, 1993 our Mom and father immigrated to the US and lived in San Francisco. Our Mom dedicated herself to take care of Dad until his passing in 1999. She missed him terribly and filled her life by spending special occasions with family, attending Church services and activities, interaction with members, vacationing in the Philippines to visit children and grand kids. Her friends remember her tight hugs and sweet smile. She also loved to dance which made her joyful.
Because Mom loved family gatherings, reunions, cooking, dancing, singing and enjoying every second of her life , we saw to it that she celebrated her 90th birthday in Davao City on March 23, 2018. It was grand and festive. She was the happiest being back with family and relatives in the Philippines. Everybody loves her because she knew how to take care in return. Back in the US in the same year, we took Mama to several places around. Her favorite place is the ocean looking at those ships come and go at the Pacific Ocean in San Francisco while calling our relatives in the Philippines.
On February 20, 2021, our Mom passed away quietly and peacefully with her children: Inday Tita, Dearie, Richard, daughter-in-law Analynn and 4 grand kids: Kendrick, Kevyn, Rhianne and Richyl by her side. Back in the Philippines, she's survived by her sons Ramie, Robert, daughter-in-law Geraldine and five grand daughters: Keith, Michelle, Farrah, Dorothy and Hazel.
Our Mom had faced many struggles and hardships but togetherness, caring for one another , harmony, love, and peace made her life longer, easier, and merrier. She lived her life to the fullest with no regrets, and full of love, courage, and strong faith in God. She will be missed but never forgotten. She will forever be in our hearts ??
