Terry Gene Lowenberg, 78, passed away on Saturday, March 29, at his home in Iowa City, IA. He was preparing his flower beds for spring blossoms with his beloved dog (Rascal) by his side. Terry was born in Batavia, IA, on December 1, 1935 to the late Gene and Bernice Lowenberg. He graduated from Batavia High School in 1953 and attended the University of Iowa before enlisting as a reservist with the United States Army. While enlisted, he met the love of his life Barbara (Bobby) Ann Hillman on the beaches of Hawaii. They married on January 17, 1958 in Ottumwa, IA, and later made their home in Fairfield. Terry was known for his charismatic personality, quick wit and ability to connect with others. As a banker for over 40 years, he devoted himself to helping his customers and built lasting relationships that he cherished greatly. His love for farming was rekindled in the mid-1970s when he purchased some farmland and cattle. Growing crops, baling hay, tending to his livestock, and cutting wood in the timber, all gave him great pleasure. After retiring as President of the Iowa State Bank & Trust Company in Fairfield, he continued his banking career working with his son Greg, years that were especially rewarding for Terry. At the age of 50, Terry devoted himself to better health and became a biking enthusiast. He was an avid participant in Ragbrai and joined the Iowa 150 biking group where he road over 1200 miles from Iowa to Washington, DC. Terry moved to Iowa City in 1998 where he continued to enjoy biking, attending performances at Hancher Auditorium and participating in classes at the University of Iowa. Terry was dedicated to life-long learning and it was customary for students to see him in class. Terry was a an active member of the Fairfield community and volunteered his time on the Jefferson County Fair Board, Chamber of Commerce, Fairfield Country Club, Walton Club, Elks Lodge and many other organizations. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Iowa City. Other pastimes included golfing, fishing, hunting, trapping, playing cards, reading and traveling. Terry is preceded in death by his parents and wife, Bobby. He is survived by his son, Greg Lowenberg and wife June of Fairfield, IA; daughter Lori Danielson and husband Steve of Terre Haute, IN; his sister Marcia (Micki) Stewart of Dubuque, IA; grandkids, Kyla and Davis Lowenberg and Spencer and Ali Danielson; nephews Kyle and Todd Stewart; and his dog Rascal who will make his new home in Terre Haute, IN. Terry's wishes were for cremation. Visitation and a Celebration of Life services are scheduled for Saturday, April 12 at First Presbyterian Church in Fairfield. Visitation is at the church from 1-3 and a Celebration of Life begins at 3 p.m. A reception for family and friends will be held from 4-6 p.m. at the Fairfield Country Club. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Greater Jefferson County Foundation in Fairfield and Rebuild Hancher in Iowa City. The arrangements are in the care of the Raymond Funeral Home.
