Thelma Catherine "Katie" Cherry passed away on June 24, 2023, at her daughter's home in Southaven, MS. She was born on February 23, 1933, the daughter of the late James and Maggie Hibbard Guinn. Katie was a loving mother to her daughter Phyllis, who was the light of her life. Katie was an ardent supporter of family values and enjoyed spending time with family from Ohio, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida.
Katie had many hobbies and interests but what she enjoyed most was volunteering. She was regularly active in various volunteer activities that helped the community. Her altruistic nature and compassionate character touched numerous lives and won her many devoted friends. Katie took pleasure in traveling with her daughter Phyllis and son-in-law D'Arcy whom she valued as more than just family.
Katie's faith journey entailed being a former member of Calvary Baptist Church while living in Jackson, TN before becoming an active member of Gracewood Baptist Church located in Southaven, Mississippi.
Katie will be remembered for her unwavering spirit of generosity and kindness to those in need. Her good-heartedness has left an indelible mark in the hearts of everyone who knew her.
SERVICES: A visitation has been scheduled for Thursday, June 29, 2023 at the Mausoleum of Highland Memorial Gardens beginning at 12:30 pm to be followed by a cryptside service at 1 pm.
She is survived by her daughter, Phyllis Griggs and husband D'Arcy of Southaven, MS; her brother, Thomas Guinn and wife Kathy of Tuscumbia, AL and many friends whose lives she touched along the way.
She is predeceased by her husband, Ashley Cherry; brothers, Jim Guinn, Bob Guinn, Ralph Guinn, Russell Guinn; sisters, Edna Phillips, Dorothy Parish and Marie Kerley amongst many others that loved and cherished her deeply.
The family is requesting that memorial contributions be directed to the American Heart Association, 4728 Sportswood Ave. #214, Memphis, TN 38117 or online at www.heart.org.
