Theodore "Ted" Bachunas, 90, passed away at Hanson Hospice Center in Stevensville on Dec. 10, 2025.
Ted was born April 1, 1935, in Benton Harbor, to Sophia H. and Alexander J. Bachunas who both immigrated to the U.S. from Lithuania. The family lived in Sodus Township, as his father, Al, founded Tabor Farm Resort with his brother and business partner, Joseph Bachunas. Ted went to the one-room Tabor School, Benton Harbor High School, and graduated from Michigan State University. He also attended Loyola Law School. At an early age, he worked at Tabor Farm and continued during college vacations. After MSU, he worked for a hotel accounting firm in both Chicago and Cleveland. He then returned to St. Joseph, and purchased Ludlow Travel with Richard Ray in 1972.
He was active in many community organizations: Ft. Miami Heritage Society, St. Joseph Today, Old St. Joseph Neighborhood Association, The OutCenter, and served as president of the Southwest Michigan Symphony Orchestra. His interest in old homes led him to purchase the Kent House on State Street in St. Joseph and the house next door, where he resided until his death. He was fortunate to travel extensively, with cruises as his favorite way to experience the world. Italy and India were his two favorite countries.
Cremation has taken place, and a celebration of life will be from 10-11:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 13, at Starks & Menchinger Chapel, 2650 Niles Road, St. Joseph, with a brief service following at 11:30 a.m. Fr. Richard Prendergast will officiate.
Ted is survived by his nephews: Kevin Geiser (Ann Dahmer), Craig Geiser, Eric (Cindy) Geiser and two great-nephews: Cameron and Ryan Geiser. Also, dear friends David, Rich, Bruce and many others.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister and brother-in-law: Elaine and Dale Geiser.
In lieu of flowers, contributions to the OutCenter in Benton Harbor would be greatly appreciated. Those wishing to sign Ted's memory book online may do so at www.starks-menchinger.com.
