Theresa Anne (nee Bracken) Broun died in Fredericktown, Ohio on November 1, 2025. She will be sorely missed by her family.
Born June 21, 1934 in Akron, Ohio, to Thomas and Mary Bracken, Theresa was a devout Roman Catholic mother who devoted her working life to helping the sick. After graduating from Manchester High School and St. Thomas Nursing School in 1957, she began her career in Akron. She moved to Los Angeles, Calif. where she started a family. She returned to Ohio in the mid-1970s. She served as a registered nurse at Akron Children's Hospital and later for the Veterans Administration (mostly at Brecksville VA) until her retirement. In January 1959, Theresa appeared on the front page of the Akron Beacon Journal for her nursing work with children.
She was an avid reader of great literature, a shy but excellent pianist, and an intrepid world traveler. A child of the Great Depression, she was an incredible crafter of things: Chicken paprikash, chocolate chip cookies, elaborate hand-sewn holiday outfits for her daughters with matching hand- and ear-muffs, gold curtains-she could do it all. She loved Elvis, Dolly Parton, Engelbert Humperdink, and, later in life, Irish history. One of her favorite songs was Parton's "Love Is Like A Butterfly" and favorite novels was Boris Pasternak's "Doctor Zhivago," whose film theme she loved to play on piano.
She respected education and worked long hours and saved pennies to put her children through university. Her love of the Holy Mother and Infant Jesus were profound, and Christmas and Easter were, to her, massive, colorful, ornate undertakings filled with homemade crafts, mountains of baked goods, and homemade clothes.
She is survived by sons Patrick (Cherise) Bracken and William (Annmarie) Broun; daughters Daphne Swan, Denise (Don Michael) Kirkwood and Ellen Corsi-Tutko; grandchildren Erin Swan, William Dunn, Avery Dunn, Thomas Dunn, and Clair Dunn; Hasin Turner, Patrick Bracken, Brendan Bracken, Briana Bracken, and Quinlan Bracken; Tobias Broun; Whitney Kirkwood and Abraham Kirkwood; former husband William A. Broun; and many loving nephews and nieces.
She was predeceased by brothers Thomas and Donald (Sue) Bracken and sister Rosemary (Arthur) Nakane.
In later life, Theresa was cared for heroically by her eldest son, Patrick, who built a tiny house for her where, even when unable to walk, Theresa could peer out a window and watch the deer, songbirds, and butterflies.
A funeral mass in Theresa's honor will take place on Saturday, November 22, 2025, at 9 a.m. in St. Peter Catholic Church, 220 E Butler St., Loudonville, OH, at 10:30 am.
