It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of a very special person in our lives. Theresa Gemmati, a retired educator, mom, grandmother, sister, and aunt died on Tuesday, June 29, 2021, after a long illness. She just celebrated her 79th birthday.
The daughter of Peter and Theresa Delgaldo Rizzo, she was born on June 27, 1942 in the Bronx.
Theresa graduated from St. Johns University and went on to a career in teaching Elementary School in Minisink Valley. She married Frank Gemmati on Aug. 7, 1965 in Queens, NY and they had one son together. They moved into Middletown in 1975, raising their son made it possible to enjoy the camaraderie of sisters, brothers-in-law, and many cousins, as they were surrounded by family. Theresa retired from the Minisink Valley School District 1997. Theresa enjoyed her time spent with family, thoroughly delighting in her grandchildren.
She is survived by her son, Frank and his wife, Kimberly Gemmati of Monroe; grandchildren, Peter and Nicole Gemmati; and sister, Patricia Dunleavy of Mt. Hope.
She was predeceased by her parents, her husband, Frank Gemmati, Sr.; sisters, Stella and husband, Michael Grant Sr., and Rosemarie Groner; brother-in-law, Hank Dunleavy, and nephew, Michael Grant.
Family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, July 2nd, at Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home,Inc., 130 Highland Ave., Middletown, NY 10940. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 3rd at the Holy Name of Jesus RC Church in Otisville, NY with the Rev. Fr. Michael Palazzo officiating. Entombment will take place at Our Lady Queen of Peace Mausoleum in St. Josephs Cemetery, Middletown, NY.
