Thomas W. "Tommy B." Berninger

Thomas W. "Tommy B." Berninger, a lifelong resident of East Boston, passed away peacefully at home on June 6, surrounded by the love of his family after a tenacious battle with ALS.

Tommy was the devoted husband of Mary C. (McDonald) Berninger. He was the cherished father of Megan Berninger and her fiancé, Dave Yaffe, of Winthrop, T.J. Berninger and his wife, Stephanie, of Weymouth, Jeremy Santos of East Boston, and Marc Berninger of Boston.

He was the beloved brother of Michael Berninger and his wife, Jean, of West Roxbury, and Patricia Berninger and her husband, Paul Garrity. Tommy was a very special Seanthair to his adored grandsons, Jacob and Richard Yaffe. He is also survived by many loving extended family members, lifelong friends, and his brothers and sisters in the fire service.

A graduate of Malden Catholic High School, Class of 1977, Tommy was an avid sports enthusiast who enjoyed both playing and following athletics throughout his life. Following graduation, he proudly served his country in the United States Navy from 1977 to 1981 as an Aviation Firefighter. He attained the rank of Petty Officer Third Class (E-4) and served aboard the USS Constellation. Tommy was honorably discharged following his military service.

Tommy dedicated more than 32 years of service to Massport Fire-Rescue as a firefighter, serving with distinction on both the Engine and Marine Units. He was also a valued member of the Boston Red Sox EMS staff. Throughout his career with both the United States Navy and the Fire Department, Tommy earned recognition and commendations from his superior officers for his professionalism, dedication, and commitment to service.

He was a past member of the Winthrop Elks and was well known for his loyalty, sense of humor, and unwavering devotion to his family, friends, fellow firefighters, and community. Tommy's legacy of service, friendship, and love will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Family and friends will honor Tommy's life by gathering at the Ruggiero Family Memorial Home, East Boston, on Friday from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM and again on Saturday morning at 10:00 AM at St. Joseph–St. Lazarus Church, East Boston, for a Funeral Mass. Please meet directly at church.

Services will conclude with Tommy being laid to rest at Winthrop Cemetery, Belle Isle Section, in Winthrop, Massachusetts.
