Tom Bowers was greeting worshipers as my late wife Shannon, and I were leaving the service on our third visit to St. Luke's Church in Atlanta in 1972. He stopped us and said, "We need a young couple to teach the 3rd grade class during Lent". Our response was something like, "We are just visiting and are still deciding where to make our church home." Tom continued his urging, but we gracefully declined. The following day, Shannon got a call from Patty, Tom's assistant, who said, "Rev. Bowers gladly told me you will be teaching the 3rd grade class during Lent, and I want to thank you. You will be hearing from our children's minister to assist you in preparing for the class." We taught the class after realizing Tom's persuasive way. His sermons were engaging, revealing in his delivery, making us laugh, letting us cry, having everyone leave believing in living a Christ like life.
For six years I had the joy of working with Tom until, while I was Senior Warden (chair of the administrative board), he called one day to say he had been called to St. Bartholmew's Church in New York. I have been forever grateful serving with him and being lifted in faith.

I and my grown family will always love and remember Tom. It was a joyous time at St. Luke's and the life and heart-changing years that Tom gave us were the most meaningful of our lives. We send much love to his family who we remember well. Lane (Fristoe) Waas
