Thomas Carbery Obituary

Thomas R. Carbery Jr.
Born: April 7, 1931
Died: August 9, 2023
Thomas R Carbery Jr.
Age 92, favorite son of Lockport and Fairmont, Tom bade an Irish goodnight and slipped away after spending the day with his four children. He met the love of his life at his junior prom and kept the dance ticket in his wallet his entire life. Tom was an incredible father and grandfather, and created community wherever he went. A Joliet Catholic High School and Tri-State University graduate, Tom spent most of his career as a Civil Engineer at Chicago Bridge and Iron Company where he worked on global infrastructure projects including one that led to the creation of the city of Dubai and the formation of the United Arab Emirates. He gave back to his community generously as a volunteer at Silver Cross Hospital, St. Dennis Parish, Joliet Catholic Academy and as organizer of the Fairmont Reunion Picnic. Tom loved lifelong friends, family, and his Lockport neighbors and made new friends in his last years at StoryPoint Manor and Memory Care where he received support from tender caregivers. He loved concerts at the Norton Building, newspapers, magic shows, and toasts to friendship. Preceded in death by his parents Thomas and Louise (Costa) Carbery and his wife of 55 years Joan (Elwood) Carbery. Survived by his children Michael (Missy), Stephen (Corey), Paul (Sherry) and Patricia (Sandi) Carbery, his grandchildren, Madeline, Rob (Lesley), Charlie (Meghan), Ben (Hannah, fiance?), Louise, Connor (Hana) and Quinn, and his great-grandchildren RJ, Lucas, and Dahlia. How lucky can one man get? In lieu of flowers, memorials to Joliet Catholic Academy, Society of the Little Flower, The Trevor Project, or Alzheimer's Association would be deeply appreciated.
Family will greet relatives and friends on Saturday, September 2, 8:30 to 9:30 am at the Joliet Catholic Academy Chapel, 1200 Larkin Avenue, Joliet with a Memorial Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 at JCA. The family will host a Celebration of Life at McWethy's Tavern, 1700 West Renwick Road, Romeoville immediately following mass.

A really special man who always said hello with a smile and was generous in every way. We were lucky to have his counsel and friendship during JCA activities, along with Joan. A special couple reunited. Sincere sympathy to the family.
