Jim was born July 4, 1944, in Raleigh, North Carolina to Thomas Grier Carnes and Dorothy Freeman Carnes. He graduated from West Fulton High School in Atlanta, Georgia and went on to earn degrees in Civil Engineering from Southern Technical Institute in 1964 and 1973. Jim built a life-long and lasting career as a Project Manager in commercial construction with such highlighted projects as the Galleria in Dallas (J.A. Jones Construction), Sandia Laboratories upgrade (Manhattan Construction), Bernalillo County Courthouse (Bradbury Stamm Construction), College of Santa Fe Visual Arts Center (Bradbury Stamm Construction), and New Mexico Heart Hospital (Bradbury Stamm Construction) to name a few. Shortly after the birth of his granddaughter, Jim retired from his esteemed career as Senior Vice President with Bradbury Stamm Construction in Albuquerque, New Mexico, a company and team that Jim revered dearly as family.
Jim had a zest for life with his family at the forefront. He had passion for playing guitar, listening to music, attending festivals, travel, genealogy, and all things Scotland and New Mexico. Jim had a "never met a stranger" outlook on life and made friends everywhere he went. These are friendships that Jim held close to his heart, and they transcended time and distance.
Jim is survived by loving family: his daughter, Cynthia Carnes, his son-in-law Patrick Fisher, his granddaughter Ceilidh Fisher, his former wife of 28 years, Sherron Carnes, niece Mary Elizabeth Fortune, nephew Marshall Gunn, stepsons Lucas Hadsell and Ethan Hadsell, as well as numerous cousins and close friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Thomas Grier Carnes, mother Dorothy Freeman Carnes, sister Mary Carnes Gunn, and his wife of 25 years, Barbara Blumberg Carnes.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 4:00 p.m., Saturday, October 25, 2025, at Allen Family Funeral Options, Plano, Texas.
