Thomas Carroll died peacefully in his home in Rossmoor, CA on Monday, September 15th, 2025. Tom was 86 years old when he passed and spent his final weeks in the company of his three children; Stephen, Susan, and David. Tom was born on May 6,1939 in Chicago, Illinois to Thomas and Kathryn (Styles) Carroll. Upon graduating from St. Ignatius High School, where he was an accomplished tennis player and runner, Tom entered the Jesuit seminary. During his nine years of Jesuit training, he studied Philosophy at Loyola University Chicago and spent two years as a high school teacher and coach at Loyola Academy High School, Chicago. He left the seminary and later met his wife, Julie.

Tom and Julie were married in Chicago and moved to Los Angeles, settling in Glendale, CA, where they started a family. Tom worked at IBM for 26 years where he most notably developed and taught a course on mid-range computer systems. He was highly regarded as a corporate teacher. After retiring from IBM he worked for Cornerstone Systems for many years, continuing to teach and consult.

Beyond teaching, Tom was active in the greater Los Angeles community. He coached numerous youth sports teams, assisted with the Loyola High School football team, and was a mainstay at St. Robert Bellarmine in Burbank as both a Eucharistic minister and lector.

Tom was a lifelong avid runner, tennis player, and golfer. In a testament to both his determination and attention to detail, he ran over 20,000 miles in a ten-year period and meticulously recorded each running session. Tom completed many marathons, with his crowning achievement running the Boston Marathon in 2 hours and 44 minutes. He was a beloved regular at the Glendale tennis courts every weekend for decades, as well as the DeBell golf course in Burbank.

Tom spoke often and with high regard of his time with the Jesuits. He carried his faith, devotion to service, and selflessness into all aspects of his life. From spending countless hours doing pro bono tax work for seniors and volunteering at St. Robert Bellarmine, to help a stranger change a tire on the side of a freeway, Tom embodied the Jesuit ideal of being 'a man for others.' He is greatly missed but his spirit of service will be felt for years to come.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Julie who passed away in February 2025. He is survived by his sisters Mary Kathryn Hartigan and Margaret Flynn: children Stephen (Christina), Susan, David (Sarah): and his five grandchildren Ryan, Finley, Caleb, Carlyn and Dylan.
