Tom, I will miss you and our lunches with Brenda, discussing movies from the eighties through the 2000s. I learned so much about the Civil War and WWII from you. Thank you for being so kind and gracious

Tom was one of those larger than life figures that we all enviously wished we could also be. He was a forceful and tireless advocate for the science mission at USNO, a team leader who never closed his office door, and a true friend for a large professional family. However I think my fondest memories are of him playing with the younger children at social gatherings. Tom, the boy, was never far from Tom the grown man.

Dear Brenda and family,
we have been very fortunate to have had Tom as our supervisor,
mentor, colleague, and friend. Tom was instrumental in
getting us into USNO and we are grateful for his help
and sponsorship regarding our green cards and later US
citizenship. We enjoyed those many lunches with him and
Brenda immensely, profited from his wast knowledge, and
enjoyed his humor. He will be greatly missed.

Dear Brenda, I was so very sorry to hear that your husband Tom passed away last week. Reading about his life, I had no idea how you all had travelled to observe the skies and meet fellow astronomers all around the world! No wonder it was you who organized and held the first LISA (Library and Information Services in Astronomy) international conference at the U.S. Naval Observatory in Washington, DC in 1988! My condolences to your, your son and his wife, and your two granddaughters. Jane Holmquist
