**Obituary for Thomas Cully**
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Thomas Cully, affectionately known as Tom, who entered eternal life on Monday, September 2, 2024, following a lengthy illness. Born in Brooklyn, NY, on November 3, 1937, to the late Peter and Katherine (O'Donnell) Cully, both of whom hailed from Donegal, Ireland, Tom's spirit was shaped by a rich heritage and deep-rooted faith.
Tom's journey began at Saint Teresa's elementary school, where he first encountered the Xaverian Brothers, a moment that would guide his path. He entered the formation program at Saint Joseph Juniorate in Peabody, MA, in 1952 and later embraced the life of a Xaverian Brother, taking the religious name "Brother Russell." His commitment to education and service led him to earn a BA from Catholic University and pursue further studies at esteemed institutions like Columbia University and Gannon.
A true lover of the outdoors, Tom reveled in adventures with his brother Charlie, exploring the breathtaking landscapes of Ireland, Canada, and the US West Coast. The Adirondacks held a special place in his heart, where he cherished countless memories at his hunting camp. As a master storyteller, he delighted friends and family with tales that bridged generations. Tom's life was a tapestry woven with love and friendship.
Tom was also a proud member of the South Cairo Hunting Club as well as Newcomb Hunting Club, and The Knights of Columbus.
In addition to his parents, Tom is predeceased by his brothers, Peter, and Charles, as well as dear friends "Brother Danny" and Ray Knapp.
He leaves behind a cherished family, including his devoted nephew Peter, (who cared for him in his final years), Peter's beloved wife Barbara, nieces Ann (Don) Molen, Patty (Paul) Cappociamo, and Donna (Leo) McCarey, nephew Thom, sister-in-law Louise (Peter) Cully, and two great nieces and three great nephews. He was also blessed with a supportive network of friends, including Val Kreile, who stood by him always, and the Scott brothers Jim and Dennis, with whom he shared many memorable meals on Friday nights at Vince Annas.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to Saint Jude's Children's Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place Memphis, TN 38105
Xaverian Brothers, 50 Spring St. Danvers, MA 01923 or a charity of your choice, allowing Tom's legacy of love and compassion to continue.
As we remember Tom, we celebrate his unwavering faith and the profound impact he had on countless lives. He lived out the spirit of the Xaverian Brothers, embracing all those around him with genuine care and kindness. In his unique way, Tom found communion with the living God and shared that love with everyone he encountered.
Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, September 4, 2024, from 3 to 6 pm at A.J. Cunningham Funeral Home, 4898 SR 81, Greenville, NY.
A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at Our Lady of Knock Shrine 2052 SR 145 East Durham on Thursday, September 5, 2024, at 11 am, with Father Jay Atherton officiating.

Tom was a gentleman. A friend at first meeting. The world is a lesser place.

I taught with Brother Thomas at Holy Name of Jesus School in Brooklyn, New York. He was truly a gentle giant of a man, a low key comforting presence on the school scene. - David Verzi, Stephentown, New York
