Thomas James "Papa Tom" Darnell passed away on December 6, 2025, in Bakersfield, California. Born on June 8, 1943, in Dos Palos, California, he lived a life marked by dedication to his family, service to his country and community, and a deep commitment to the values he held dear.

Thomas served in the United States Navy from 1969 to 1972 as a proud member of the Seabees, the Navy's construction battalion. His time in the military reflected his strong work ethic and sense of duty—qualities that would continue to define him throughout his life.

Following his military service, Thomas embarked on a long and respected career with the City of Bakersfield. For 30 years, he worked in the engineering department, contributing to the development and maintenance of vital infrastructure that supported the growing community. His work left a lasting impact on the city he called home.

Outside of his professional life, Thomas was an active member of the Freemasons through Caledonia Lodge. His involvement with the lodge reflected his commitment to fellowship, integrity, and service—principles that guided him both publicly and privately.

Thomas is survived by his beloved wife, Jean Darnell; his brothers Darrell and Dennis Darnell; and his sister Sharon Chambers. He also leaves behind several children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren who will carry forward his memory and legacy.

Known affectionately as "Papa Tom," he was cherished by those who knew him for his steady presence and enduring support. May his memory bring comfort to all who loved him. A Memorial Service will be held on January 9, 2026, from 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM at Greenlawn SW 2739 Panama Lane. A Interment will be held on January 9, 2026, at 02:00 PM at Bakersfield National Cemetery 30338 East Bear Mountain Blvd. A Celebration of Life will be held on January 9, 2026, from 04:00 PM to 06:30 PM at Loyal Order of Moose 905 Stine Rd.
