Thomas Foster Obituary

Thomas Glen Foster, Jr.

May 20, 1946 - January 17, 2026

Thomas Glen Foster, Jr., son of the late Thomas Glen Foster Sr. and Mary Holloway Foster Webster, was born in Greensboro on May 20, 1946, and passed away into the presence of the Lord on Saturday, January 17, 2026 at the age of 79.

Tom graduated from Dan River High School in Danville, Va., in 1964 and the University of Virginia in 1968. Commissioned through the ROTC program, he served four years in the U.S. Army and was assigned to Fort Knox, Ky., Fort Dix, N.J., and the Republic of Vietnam.

Following active duty, Tom served six years in the Army Reserves teaching armor officer career courses.

Tom earned his Law degree from the Brandeis School of Law at the University of Louisville in 1974, following active military service. He began his legal career as Assistant Guilford County Attorney advising the Department of Social Services and prosecuting welfare fraud cases.

Tom was elected District Court Judge in 1980, a position in which he served for 22 years, including two years as Chief District Court Judge. Upon appointment as an Emergency District Court Judge in 2004, he traveled on assignment to 74 North Carolina counties before retiring in 2021.

Tom was a charter member of Sharpe Road Baptist Church, where he taught Sunday school and a BSU class and was chairman of the Deacon Board. Upon becoming a member of Pleasant Garden Baptist Church, Tom served on a youth minister search committee, long-range planning committee and the Deacon Board. He served one term as moderator of the Piedmont Baptist Association.

Tom's greatest joy came from time spent with his family, including travel to vacation destinations, especially to Atlantic Beach and other impromtu trips. He treasured coaching his children in youth baseball and the Vandalia Christian School basketball leagues.

During the 20 years his three children participated in various sports in high school and college, Tom seldom missed a home or away game. After retiring, he enjoyed traveling frequently to support his four grandchildren at their games and other activities in Tennessee and in Virginia.

Tom was predeceased by his parents and step-father, Daniel M. Webster. He is survived by his sons Thomas Glen III (Lindsey), Jeffrey Michael (Summer), daughter Sarah Elizabeth Bathe (Jonathan); grandchildren Emily and Ryan Foster, Brooklyn and Jackson Bathe; brother John Blair Foster (Jill); nephew Chris Foster (Nikki), niece Julie Simmons (Kevin), and cousin Reoma McGinnis.

A private family burial will be held on Friday, January 23rd at Mountain View Cemetery in Danville, Va.

There could not have been a more competant, considerate and thoughtful judge who always ruled with compassion and focus on reform or fairness. As a practicing attorney I experienced this many times over those years. Job well done, Sir.Your life here on Earth was very well servred to a point very few achieve.

Tom was a very fair and thoughtful judge who always listened and tried to help criminal defendants rather than mete out punishments. In my practice I personally experienced this numerous times. Also as chief judge he ran a very competant court. Job well done, sir.
