Thomas Gillis Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Small’s Mortuary - Mobile on Mar. 27, 2026.
THOMAS VERNON GILLIS a proud Korean War veteran, departed this life for eternal rest with the Lord on March 24, 2026. He was proceeded in death by his parents, Alexander and Mable Gillis of Fowl River, his beloved wife, Nettie Gillis, his siblings Ide Mae Gillis, Juanita Gillis, Ray Gillis, Leophus Gillis, Eugene Gillis, Earline Rogers, and Arndell Dees; and on daughter Jeanette Gillis.

Thomas confessed Christ at an early age and remained a devoted member of Pilgrim Rest AME Zion Church of Fowl River under the leadership of Pastor Terossa Frazier. His faith guided his life, and his service to his church family was unwavering. He took great pride in caring for the church grounds, ensuring the lawn was always beautifully manicured.

He was known for his kindness, loyalty, loving spirit and the beautiful smile that warmed every room he entered. Thomas loved the outdoors, gardening, and tending to his fruit trees. His joy for nature reflected the peaceful and steady way he lived his life.

He leaves to cherish his memory one devoted niece, Barbara Winston; devoted friend Bro. Bension and sister Smith his Pastor, Terossa Frazier, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, church family and friends who loved him dearly.

Bro Gillis lived his Final years with Rev. Charles and Sandy Campbell at their VA Medical Foster Home, where he was cared for with exceptional compassion. The Campbell's tended to his medical needs, supported his daily living, and ensured he enjoyed meaningful activities that brought comfort and companionship. Their dedication provided Thomas with dignity, stability and peach throughout his final years and his family remains deeply grateful for the kindness they showed him.
