Thomas Guthrie Obituary

Published by Legacy on Feb. 24, 2026.
Thomas "Tom" Arthur Guthrie "Life is Good" 1925-2026 Tom died peacefully in his home on February 12, 2026. He was surrounded by family and friends who loved him dearly.

Tom lived a life of hard work, service and devotion to family, country and community, with special focus on teaching life skills and pride in work to young people in California and Wyoming.

Tom joined the marines at seventeen after graduating from high school in Casper, Wyoming. After boot camp, he boarded the USS Ricksy and headed for Guam, and on to the shores of Iwo Jima. After the war he went back to Wyoming to marry and start a family.

The family moved to Thermopolis and opened the A&W drive-in and bowling alley. In a few years, Tom moved to California and became the head of maintenance for a private boy's school, where he influenced many young men in a very positive way. His next move was back home to Wyoming to work for the Dubois Telephone Company until it was sold.

Tom, aka, "The Mayor of Cub Creek," was then able to realize his desire to organize pack trips into the backcountry for hunting and pleasure. Tom was happiest when he was in the saddle and riding the miles of trails he covered with his friends. Tom loved Dubois and was involved in many community projects especially if it benefitted kids. Tom was instrumental in developing the Dubois Friday night rodeo. Many will remember "Uncle Toms" bonfires and marshmallow roasts. The rodeo honored Tom in the summer of 2025 by inviting him to be their featured guest on a Friday night set aside for the honoring of our military. A beautiful tribute was given by his friend, Dan Starks, highlighting his military service and devotion to America.

Tom celebrated his 100th birthday with a huge party, and by trail riding into the badlands. Tom loved music and most of all dancing with his sister, De Lamb, at all the musical events in town. Tom was a guiding force in the lives of family and friends. Never seeking the spotlight, a loyal friend, a man of integrity, great wit and wisdom, a quiet strength to count on.

Tom is preceded in death and survived by a host of relatives.

Tom requested no funeral or memorial service He has been cremated and will be buried in a private ceremony in his beloved Wyoming backcountry.
