Thomas Eugene "Gene" Harmon, Sr., a cherished patriarch of love and selflessness, passed away peacefully at his residence in
West Point, Georgia on February 12, 2024, at the age of 95. Born on June 15, 1928, in
West Point, Georgia, Gene's life was a testament to the enduring power of dedication and kindness.
Gene's journey began in the heart of West Point, where he was born to parents who instilled in him the values of hard work and compassion. His life was one of unwavering commitment, not only to his family but also to his community. He retired from the West Point Stevens Lanett Mill after a remarkable 47 years of service, a tenure that spoke volumes about his loyalty and work ethic. Even after retirement, Gene's industrious spirit led him to become a painter, a craft he pursued with the same passion and excellence that characterized his years at the mill.
A man of faith, Gene was a faithful member of Reeds Chapel Baptist Church, where he found solace and strength in the fellowship and teachings. His spirituality was a guiding light in his life, and he lived by the principles of his faith, touching the lives of many within his church community.
Gene's love for the University of Alabama football and the Atlanta Braves was matched only by his passion for gardening. He found joy in the simple pleasures of life, nurturing his plants with the same care and attention he gave to his beloved family. His garden was a symbol of his love for growth and life, a space where he could be found tending to his plants with a gentle hand and a contented heart.
Above all, Gene was a family man. He was the loving father of Dennis Harmon (Sonia), Connie Allen, Marie Striblin, Michael Harmon (Sherry), David Harmon (Ann), Peggy Arrington (Phillip), Timmy (P.J.) Harmon, Lisa Thompson, and bonus daughter, Morgan Brooks. His brother, Babe Cummings, and sister, Pat Blanchard, along with a multitude of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren, will carry on his legacy of love and generosity. Gene's life was a tapestry woven with the threads of countless cherished moments shared with his family, each one a testament to his loving, handy, and selfless nature.
Gene was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Frances Norred Harmon, his son, Thomas Eugene Harmon, Jr., his grandsons, Nathan Harmon and Terry Harmon, his great-grandson, Sydney Harmon, and his loyal canine companion, Blondie. Their memories remain a source of comfort and inspiration to all who knew them.
As we remember Gene, we are reminded of the words of Helen Keller: "What we have once enjoyed we can never lose. All that we love deeply becomes a part of us." Gene's love and the joy he brought to our lives will forever be a part of us, a legacy that will continue to flourish in the hearts of those he touched.
Gene's life was a journey of love, service, and unwavering dedication. He was a man who built a life not on material wealth but on the richness of relationships and the joy of giving. As we bid farewell to Thomas Eugene "Gene" Harmon, Sr., we celebrate a life well-lived, a life that will continue to inspire and guide us in the days to come.
The Harmon family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to all who have been a part of Gene's life. His memory will be cherished, and his spirit will live on in the stories, laughter, and love he leaves behind.
