Thomas Hennessy Obituary

Thomas P. Hennessy

Thomas P. Hennessy, a dedicated husband and father, esteemed World War II veteran, and a pillar of his church community, passed away peacefully at home with his family at his side at the age of 98 on Thursday June 13, 2024.

Born November 30,1925, in Chicago Illinois, Tom embodied honor, service, and devotion throughout his long and fulfilling life. During World War II, he proudly followed his brothers into the service of his country in the army in the Asian Pacific theater up to VJ Day and into the occupation. He and his brothers returned home safely. He loved to entertain his family and great-grandchildren, in-particular, with his stories of his time in the war and humbly yet proudly displayed his medals and service jackets for all to see.

Following his military service, Tom returned to Chicago, where he married the love of his life, Joyce McDaniel on May 7, 1955, and together they raised six wonderful children: Thomas, Daniel, Kathleen, Mary, Annemarie, and Theresa. His dedication to his family was unwavering, always putting their needs and well-being above his own. During their 68 years of marriage, their family grew to include 12 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren, with a 16th great-grandchild due to arrive this coming fall.

Beyond his family, Tom was deeply involved in his church, St. Mary's Catholic Church, where he served as an usher for over 50 years. His faith was a cornerstone of his life, guiding his actions and inspiring those around him. He was known for his kindness, wisdom, and generosity, always ready to lend a helping hand to anyone in need.

Tom is survived by his six loving children; 12 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. His beloved wife, Joyce (July 21, 2023); his parents; as well as his brothers and sisters have preceded him in death.

A celebration of Tom's life will be held on Thursday, June 20, with visitation at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary Church, 10 N. Buffalo Grove Rd., Buffalo Grove, IL 60089, followed by Mass at 11:00 a.m.

Tom will be fondly remembered for the warmth of his Irish smile and devotion to his wife and family. Tom's courage, faith, and love legacy will continue to inspire all who knew him. He will be remembered as a true hero, a devoted father, and a cherished friend. One would never leave the Hennessy home on Rosewood Avenue without Tom's loving escort to the car and extended long wave as he watched vigilantly to make sure you got on your way safely. Today, Tom's beloved family stands in the drive, waving him the same farewell as he departs this life to reunite with his wife and family, who are awaiting him in heaven above. May he rest in eternal peace.
