Thomas Scott Maentz, 91, of
Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, passed away peacefully at home on December 22, 2025.
Tom was born in
Holland, Michigan, a place he always held dear. He was a proud graduate of Holland High School (1953) and a standout athlete. This earned him the opportunity to play football for his beloved University of Michigan.
At Michigan, Tom excelled on and off the field. He joined Sigma Chi Fraternity, Michigama, and the Wolverine football team. He was Captain of the team in 1956. That year Tom and teammate Ron Kramer, became the first Michigan athletes to grace the cover of Sports Illustrated. In 1994, Tom was inducted into the University of Michigan Hall of Honor. Then in 2019, Jim Harbaugh presented Tom with the inaugural President Gerald R. Ford Lifetime Impact Award.
Although football and friends were important at Michigan, it was there that Tom found his most endearing and meaningful relationship, with the love of his life JoAnn Monger. Tom and Jo married in 1957 and he was lovingly by her side for the next 68 years. Despite being drafted by the Chicago Cardinals, Tom chose business in order to support his soon growing family.
A true entrepreneur, Tom successfully started an automotive sales firm in 1960 and an automotive manufacturing company, TSM Corporation, in 1978. He retired in 2017, spending more time in Jupiter, Florida. His hobbies included golf, reading, and of course cheering for the Wolverines.
Tom was a humble and generous soul who touched the lives of many, always respectful and willing to lend support. He was a wonderful role model for his three children and seven grandsons. A true patriarch, Tom's family always came first and his legacy will endure.
Tom was the loving husband of JoAnn. Devoted father of Tom II (Beth), Katie Prior (Tom), and Susan Martin. Proud "Papa" to Tom III and Dan Maentz, Scott (Julia), Rob (Kelli), and Ryan Prior, Jeff and Nick Martin. He was predeceased by his parents, Henry & Margaret Maentz, and his brother Henry.
The family is planning a private funeral and celebration of life at a later date. If you wish to honor Tom with a gift, please consider a donation to Target ALS,
a favorite charity, or the Melanoma Research Foundation.
