Thomas (Tom) James Mauries, age 94, entered heaven on Tuesday, February 4, 2025 after living a faith filled, active, purpose driven, vibrant, accomplished, energetic and very positive life. He was an artist, singer, exercise buff, nature and animal lover, author, movie critic, avid gardener, dancer, community volunteer, coach and mentor, bowler, sports fanatic, music lover, restaurant connoisseur, church member and ice cream eater!!!
A Colorado native, Tom was born on the dining room table at his home in Denver, to Greek immigrant parents, James and Katina Mauries. Tom spent his childhood participating in sports, particularly track and field, helping at his father's diner, raising animals, and being an integral part of the Greek Orthodox Church and community. Tom graduated from South High School and attended Denver University, where he obtained both a Bachelor's and Masters degree in education, with the emphasis in Physical Education and coaching. Tom earned a name for himself in college as the guy who won the state record in high jumping with a height of 6’4”.
Tom was proud of his country and served in the Air Force National Guard, where he received an honorable discharge and will be buried at Ft. Logan National Cemetery.
As a teacher and coach, Tom's career included 36 years at Denver Public School District, (Kennedy High School) and 11 years at the Cherry Creek School District as a Substitute Teacher. During his time at Kennedy High School, Tom was a coach for boys and girls cross country, track and basketball. His girls basketball team took sixteen league and district championships, and the boys took twelve. Coach Mauries or “Mo’or Coach Mavroudis, had many runners earn state championships.
His honor of awards include: National High School Coaches Award presented in cooperation with Scholastic Coaches Magazine (1989) Cross Country Gold Award, CHSCA Cross Country 1982 & 1983, Coach of the Year for DPS Coaches Association Girls Cross Country 1985,1986,1987, and 1988.
In 1989 Tom started working as a award winning track and cross country official, and continued to enjoy this side hustle well into his eighties. He was even one of the candidates to officiate at the Olympics.
Besides his family, the most important thing in Tom's life, which he credits his longevity to, is his belief in God and his devotion and love for his Greek Orthodox Church. He was an alter boy, sang in the choir, a Director of Sunday School, AHEPA member and board member, YAL basketball coach, member of the the churches' bowling team until the ripe old age of 92, and was the ice cream booth boss at the Greek Market Place Festival. He never missed a day of church in his life and lived out his faith by treating everyone with kindness and generosity.
Tom was a pillar in his home and community. He is a legend and he positively influenced so many. He will live forever in the hearts and minds of everyone he knew. How blessed we were to have him in our hearts and his affection, encouragement, humor and love will be greatly missed.
He leaves behind his devoted wife of 65 years, Mary; his three children: Zoe (Douglas Gibbs), Jim (Jennifer) and George (Michelle); grandchildren: Miranda (Martin Pospisil), Noah "My Boy" Gibbs {children of Zoe and Douglas}, Thomas and Lucy Mauries, {children of Jim and Jennifer}, Chloe (Taylor Sweet) {daughter of George and Michelle}; his first great-grandchild Colton; Demi Mauries (Hubert Rodriguez) and faithful companion Tiger Kitty. Tom is preceded in death by his dear friend Andy Kuskulis; siblings: Margie Allee, Agnes Hughes and Dr. Christy Mauries; and all his loving dogs he had over the years.
