Thomas "Tommy" Curtis McMillan, Jr. went home to be with his Lord on February 5, 2024, at the age of 79. Tommy was born to the late Thomas C. McMillan, Sr and Mrs. Mary Pierce McMillan. In addition to his parents he was predeceased by a grandson, Mason Hackworth. Tommy retired as a Planner and Estimator for Norfolk Naval Shipyard. After retirement he went to work for Chesapeake Public Schools and was an assistant to coaches of both wrestling and football at Oscar Smith High School. Tommy was a long-time member of South Norfolk Baptist Church.
He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Anne Brothers McMillan; children, Curtis McMillan (Janet), Kelly Kitchens (John), and Mary Beth Hackworth (David); five grandchildren, Cole, Morgan, Kaitlyn, Taylor, and Mary Anna; and his sister, Mary Ann Wilber.
One of Tommy's passions was the sport of wrestling. Tommy has been an athlete, coach, official, organizer, fan and promoter of the sport. Tommy's love of wrestling began in junior high school and continued at his beloved Oscar Smith High School and Old Dominion University where he wrestled for the legendary coach, Pete Robinson. He was an ambassador for the sport and served as referee for 39 years. Tommy became part of Virginia Challenge in 2001 and was instrumental in providing numerous tournaments and wrestling opportunities for thousands of young wrestlers for over 20 years. In 2014, Tommy was inducted in the National Wrestling Hall of Fame, Virginia Chapter. In 2023, he was inducted as a Legend in the Chesapeake Sports Club, and most recently Tommy was named the 16th recipient of the Colon E. and Anna L. Baker Award at the Virginia Duals for his many contributions to the sport of wrestling.
