Co-founder and President Emeritus of Quest Diagnostics Medical Laboratory of Pittsburgh, PA., Thomas D. Moses, 83, passed away in his sleep on June 1st with his loving family by his side. Tom and William B Zeiler, M.D., along with 19 pathologists from Pittsburgh and surrounding areas, developed the first free standing automated medical testing laboratory on the South Side of Pittsburgh. Tom, his wife Sandy and 17 month old son, John Frederick left Mansfield, Ohio to come to Pittsburgh in January 1969. Son, Todd Joseph, was born at Magee hospital, after 2 weeks in their new home in Pleasant Hills. With hard work and his outstanding leadership skills, as well as the support from Dr. Zeiler and the other pathologists, Tom began the formation of his laboratory family. The laboratory began with 8 original employees, a couple of whom were still with him when he retired in 1999. At that time, the laboratory was known as Clinical Pathology Facility (CPF). As the company grew under Tom's supervision, CPF established additional locations in Cleveland, Columbus and Erie. In the years to come, CPF and Associated Clinical Labs merged and evolved into Lab Corp Laboratories. Eventually Corning Inc. became interested in the laboratory business and CPF merged with Met Path Laboratories to become Corning Medical Labs. After several years, Corning spun off the laboratory business which then became known as Quest Diagnostic, one of the largest and most respected laboratories today. After retirement, Tom stayed on as a consultant for 3 more years. Tom was so very proud of the facilities that he and his employees built in Oakland, South Side and finally the large facility, which he designed with the help of his CPF family, in Greentree – now called Quest Diagnostics. Tom often spoke of the roles that so many played in the establishment of this giant laboratory in Pittsburgh. Each of these individuals, from the electrician to the plumber to the laboratory techs, were all a part of his laboratory family, as he often referred to each by name, as he told stories of the laboratory days.
Tom has always been so proud of being a part of the development of Nevillewood Country Club. He and Clinical Pathology became "silent" partners in the golf course development at Nevillewood, PA along with developers George and Rick Stambrosky, Mike Dempster and Ron Dietrich. An avid golfer, Tom and his company became larger investors in what today is one of the premiere golf course communities in PA. Even in his last days, he enjoyed watching the golfers, from his back patio, as they putted on the 12th green and teed off on the 13th tee.
Besides his wife, Sandy and sons John (Colleen) and Todd (Tracy), Tom's pride and joy is seen in his grandson, Chase Thomas and granddaughter, Mia Rae. "We all have been honored to share every aspect of his life exemplified by the depth of his integrity and his unselfishness". As Chase wrote in his last letter to his grandfather, "you are a legend to me, someone who was able to create a thriving and loving family all while being the greatest inspiration I've ever known". Tom always tried to inspire others to have confidence in themselves, to help others and to never forget where we began and the hard work it took to get where we are. Tom never met a stranger, "they were always a friend, he had not yet met". Knowing Tom, his wife Sandy is confident that he would like to thank all those who traveled his wonderful journey with him. Tom was admired by so many. If he could use one word today to describe what has meant the most to him, it most definitely would be "family". Tom sadly says goodbye to his brother Michael (Sally) of Cochranton, PA, his nieces and nephews, many cousins and the Ward sisters-in-law and brother-in-law. He will joyfully rejoin his father, Frederick, Mother, Edith and brother, Frederic that he has missed for so many years.
Our family would like to express our most sincere gratitude to all of the doctors, nurses, aides and support staff on Floor 9G at UPMC-Presbyterian Hospital for all of the incredible care they provided to Tom, as well as the unmatched compassion and support they conveyed to our family.
Friends received at Beinhauer Funeral Home, 2828 Washington Road, McMurray, PA on Monday June 6th from 4:00p-7:00p and Tuesday June 7th from 11:00a – 12:00p where a Blessing Service will be held on Tuesday at 12:00p in the chapel. Private entombment at Queen of Heaven Cemetery.
