It´s hard to learn of Tom´s passing and not be affected. Tom understood design in a truly dimensionally aware way. His contributions to how life is arranged were many. I´ll always be grateful for his impact on my life and for the opportunity to have met Susan and the family. Thank you.

Sad news to hear about the passing of my RISD grad school professor. Tom Ockerse left an indelible impression on my design education and viewpoint on life. We didn't always see eye-to-eye, but he was one of the most open-minded individuals I've met. As a young, Black, stubborn student - he, the white, Dutch, semiotician, gave me the space and listened to my ideas - and I genuinely opened his mind to an alternative perspective. Condolences and deepest sympathies to the family. He will be missed.

I am so saddened to hear of Tom´s passing. He was a consummate educator and colleague, and just a kind and creative soul. Throughout my years of travel visiting alumni around the globe, Tom´s name consistently came up from his former students as a favorite professor. They shared that they continued to be impacted by the excellence of his teaching and mentorship, long after their time at RISD. The lasting impact he made on so many lives was evident.
Tom´s talents were many, his legacy well-earned, and his generosity a model. He will be sorely missed. My heartfelt condolences to his family.
