Thomas V. Palen age 73, died 2-9-26 following a sudden illness. Born 8-5-52 in Englewood, NJ son of the late Mary and Marion Palen. Tom graduated from Newark College of Engineering in Newark, NJ. Tom had been employed by Raytheon for many years.

Tom was a fifth degree black belt in Judo and life member of the USJI, USJF, and USJA. He was active for many years as a competitor and coach in Arizona Judo and head instructor in Ikudokan Kasuga Judo Club. He was very influencial in the lives of many of his students, young and old. He loved seeing them succeed in life and improve their way of life through Judo. Tom was also active in Companion Animal Association of Arizona visiting nursing homes and hospitals with a trained therapy dog. This was also therapy for him as a cancer survivor. He supported his wife's dog training business and workshops behind the scenes while working with many of the family dogs in classes. He worked three successive therapy dogs until Covid interrupted. He and his dog were beloved by many especially in the nursing home he visited. His last therapy dog, Lark, mourns for him. An incredibly intelligent, strong man, Tom delighted in playing chess and board games. He was famous for beating an entire team of people playing Trivial Pursuit. He was well-loved and many people mourn the loss.

Tom is preceded in death by his parents and parents in law, one sister in law, and two brothers in law

Survived by his wife of 42 years, Tawni McBee, three sons, 4 sisters-in law, brother William (Elizabeth) Palen and sister Marion “Toni” Palen, 7 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, 14 nieces and nephews, and numerous great and great-great nieces and nephews.

No services are planned.. It is hoped that people he touched will gather on their own to reminisce. Please consider making a memorial contribution in Tom's name to HopeWest Hospice in Grand Junction, CO, War Horse Liberation in Rapid City, SD, Companion Animal Association of Arizona, or United States Judo Federation for junior development.
