Thomas Pilcher Obituary

Published by Memorial Services of Iowa at Ankeny Memorial (MSI) on Jul. 1, 2018.
On Sunday July 1, 2018, Thomas Eugene Pilcher, our beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend, passed away at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, IA. A visitation will be held 2:00p.m. to 4:00 p.m., Sunday, July 8, 2018 at Memorial Services of Iowa funeral home (4208 N Ankeny Blvd). Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m., Monday, July 9th also at the funeral home. Interment will be at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Adel, IA. Thomas Eugene Pilcher was born on July 18, 1941 in Charles City, IA. The son of Ora Winslow Pilcher and Agnes Rose (Fulmer) Pilcher, Tom lived most of his youth in Ackley, Central City and Osage, Iowa, graduating from Osage High School in 1959. Tom then attended Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa, where he was a member of the Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity, and served in the ROTC (Reserve Officer Training Corps) graduating in 1963 as a First Lieutenant in the US Navy, with a degree in Engineering. In both high school and college, Tom was a wrestler and loved sports in general, being a life-long Cyclones fan. Tom married Ann Elizabeth Lashbrook of Osage, Iowa in June 1963. After graduation, Tom served seven years in the US Navy as a Nuclear Submarine officer. During this time Tom and Ann had two sons and two daughters, one of whom (Kelly Ann Pilcher) preceded him in death in 1967. Upon leaving the military, Tom and his family moved around the Midwest, living in Minnesota and Kansas before settling in Webster City, IA in 1975. Tom worked as an Engineer for various small industries, and for a time owned his own small construction company. In 1989, Tom married Nancy Eppard at Webster City, IA. They made their home in Deerfield, Illinois, and Burlington, IA. Tom worked for Sarah Lee Bakery Division and Lance Corporation as an I.E. before retiring in 2009, and then moving to Ankeny, Iowa in 2014. Throughout his life, Tom enjoyed traveling, boating, RV and motorcycling, and spending time with his children, grandchildren and extended family. Not satisfied to totally sit on the sidelines even during retirement, Tom was an active member of the Burlington Kiwanis Club, and served on the Board of the Maplewood Village Association in Ankeny, including three years as Board President. Tom regularly attended Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Ankeny. Tom will be truly missed by all his friends and family. He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Nancy, his two sons, Timothy Eugene of Madison, WI, and Toby Christopher (Anne) of Atlanta, GA, one daughter Robin Christina Myers of Webster City, IA, one step-daughter Susan Eppard Gemmel (Landon) of Clive, IA, son-in-law Scott Myers of Woolstock IA, his elder brother Charles Pilcher of Norfolk, Virginia, and five grand children: Sierra Myers, Brennan Myers, Cael Alexander, Joseph Alexander and Garrett Pilcher, as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother Victor; sister Mary and step-brother Jack.

May the Grace of God be with you. Tom was good friend, growing up, we had many good times together and with our other classmates. Family is a word we have grown up with in our lives. May all of Tom's family be made strong with the good memories.

Dear family and friends of Tom,
I was a football and wrestling teammate of
Tom at Osage. He was a steadying force and
could always be counted on to do his best..,
exactly what you want as a teammate. He will
be missed. My sympathies to all of you.

So very sorry for your loss. I hope you can find comfort in God's promise to " swallow up death forever " Isaiah says; " Exultation & rejoicing will be theirs, And grief & sighing will flee away. " Hopefully soon. Sincerely,
