RALEIGH, NC -- Thomas Arnold Schmeltz, Sr., affectionately known as "Tom," passed away peacefully on January 23, 2025, in Raleigh, North Carolina, at the age of 72. Born on May 31, 1952, Tom lived a life defined by love, dedication, and family.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents, Donald and June Schmeltz, and his brothers, Donald, Tim, Daniel, and Terry. He is survived by his devoted wife, Bonnie, who stood steadfastly by his side throughout their life together. Tom is also survived by his brother Richard; his sister Kathleen Brockschmidt (Don); and his sister-in-law Mary.
He leaves behind a loving family that includes his children: Heather Schleter (Paul), Andrea Welch (Adam), Thomas Schmeltz Jr., Jay Slaughterbeck (Ashley), Tina Singleton (Joe Allen), Tammy Ford (the late Jeff), and Tracy Bihn (Jeff). Tom's 17 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren brought him immense joy and were a source of pride throughout his life.
A dedicated worker, Tom spent 36 years at Chrysler before retiring in 2008. He was also a proud veteran of the United States Army, serving his country with honor and distinction.
Tom found happiness in life's simple pleasures. He enjoyed time with family, sharing stories and laughter. His passion for model trains showcased his creativity and attention to detail. He also loved fishing and traveling, embracing the adventures life had to offer.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Tom's memory to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
A Veterans Final Salute will take place at 10:30 AM on Saturday, February 8, 2025, outside the Pemberville Legion Hall in Pemberville, Ohio.
Tom's legacy of love and kindness will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew him. His memory will be cherished always.

I met Tom in Mrs. Staib's first grade class in Pemberville. He and his brothers seemed bigger than life as we grew older! Although we lost touch over the years, I have fond memories and send heartfelt condolences to Tom's family.
