Thomas Lee Scoopmire

Mr. Thomas Lee "Tom" Scoopmire, 87, passed away on Wednesday, January 28, 2026, at Cypress Glen Retirement Community, Greenville, North Carolina, after an extended illness. The funeral service was conducted on Saturday, February 7, 2026, in the Wilkerson Funeral Chapel, Greenville, North Carolina. Burial followed in Pinewood Memorial Park. Tom was the son of the late Thomas Reed and Eula Marie Scoopmire. He grew up in Aurora and graduated from Aurora High School. He was a graduate of Purdue University, where he was a member of Kappa Delta Rho Fraternity. After college, he joined the United States Army and was a proud veteran. He served in the Sixth Special Forces Group and was airborne certified. During his Army service, he was stationed at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, where he met Bet. They were married in Greenville in 1965 and lived for two years in Fort Wayne, Indiana. After a frigid winter in Fort Wayne, they decided to return to Greenville, where Tom worked at Carawan Oil Company with Bet's family for many years, serving as President of the Company. Tom later started Scoop's Vending Service, which combined his knowledge of business with a personal interest in snack food. Tom was a member of Jarvis Memorial United Methodist Church and Masonic Lodge No. 51 in Aurora. Tom also enjoyed playing golf and socializing with friends at the Greenville Country Club. After Tom's retirement, he and Bet enjoyed many happy days at Litchfield-by-the-Sea, in Pawley's Island, South Carolina. He loved the leisurely pace of the beach and wonderful meals at the many area restaurants. They also enjoyed many wonderful domestic and international trips, including memorable trips to Ireland, Alaska, the Canadian Maritimes, England, Scotland, France, Germany, Spain, and Italy. Tom is survived by Wife of 60 years, Betty Carawan "Bet" Scoopmire; Son, Sean Scoopmire and wife, Meg, of Greenville, SC; Brother-in-law, Thomas E. Carawan, Jr. The family would like to extend its gratitude to the staff of Cypress Glen who cared for Tom during his illness, to the dedicated aides from SilverCare, and Gentiva Hospice.
