Thomas Smigle Obituary
He was born on January 3, 1943 in Rome, the son of the late John and Veronica Lech Smigle. He graduated from Rome Free Academy and upon graduating served honorably in the 101st Airborne Division of the US Army as a paratrooper (1961 - 1964). He later worked as a Construction Surveyor on many building and road projects around New York State until he retired. After retirement, he was known to hop in his car and drive wherever he wanted, whether it was to nearby Osceola, NY or to Alaska by way of Canada. Once he got his furry friend, Woofie, he had a traveling companion. Tom built his home in West Leyden from the ground up. Whether he was in the woods hunting, in the water fishing or working with his hands, he lived life with purpose and pride. He was known to be a quiet and humble man, always up for an adventure. He was always willing to give a lending hand to a friend or family member in need.
He was a member of the American Legion Post 406, Boonville, NY.
Tom is survived by his children, John Smigle and Lisa Smigle. He also leaves behind his grandchildren, Christopher, Aiden, and Leland; nieces and nephews, Mary Kay Moran, Thomas Saquet, Rob Saquet, Jen Vaught and their children. This is not to forget his friends around the area and at the Milk Plant Tavern where he enjoyed his warm Genesee beers. He was predeceased by his sister, Janice Saquet.
A private burial will be at St. Mary's Cemetery at Prussian Settlement Cemetery, West Leyden. There will not be any calling hours or service. There will be a Celebration of Life at a future date. Memorial contributions in his name may be made to West Leyden Ambulance, P.O. Box 205, West Leyden, NY 13489.
