Thomas Smith Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by McMillan-Small Funeral Home & Crematory on Dec. 5, 2025.
Born on August 3, 1943, and raised in Austin, Texas, Thomas Woodard Smith Ill carried a warm spirit, a curious mind, a steadfast work ethic and a commitment to service throughout his life. He graduated from Stephen F. Austin High School in 1961 and graduated from Stanford University in 1965. He was a conscientious objector of the Vietnam war serving in the Peace Corps in Sierra Leone. He later made his home in Walnut Creek, California, where he built a family, a career, and a life defined by creativity, service and spiritual dedication to Meher Baba and Sufism Reoriented.

He spent 20 years (1982 - 2002) working consistently for American Building Maintenance Company before retiring to pursue his passion through his own venture, Stonesmith LLC. His work in stone scaping and fountains was known for its artistic beauty, structural integrity, and thoughtful design-each project crafted uniquely for its space and for the people who would enjoy it. His creativity extended far beyond his profession; he was an avid reader, passionate music lover and a lifelong artist who found inspiration in every environment and a variety of media-paints, pencils, nature, photography and stones alike. He was also history buff and a great storyteller recently taking great pride in recording some of his favorite personal tales.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 25 years, Casandra Smith; his children, Neathery Brenzel (Jason Brenzel) and Gabriel Smith (Emily Chang); his sister, Beverly Dunn (Tommy Dunn); and his brother, Bill Smith (Mimi Smith). He was treasured by his in-laws, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and friends, all of whom will deeply miss his presence. He was profoundly loved by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Tom was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas Woodard Smith 11, and Ruth Alexander Smith and his first wife, Jacqueline Smith. Tom passed away on November 23, 2025, Leaving behind a life marked by love, artistry, servitude, family and many friends who loved him greatly.

I loved Tom and have many happy memories with him. I especially loved canoeing on the Delta. What a loss.

I remember Tom as always easy to be around whether in casual conversation or in shared activities. One example that has stuck with me was his inviting me to meet Oodles, your four legged companion who was a puppy when I met him. His remembering that I'm a real dog lover and making that invitation was just one example of who he was.
