Thomas E. Spurgeon

Thomas E. Spurgeon, 86, of Baltimore Maryland, passed away on November 28, 2022 after a brief battle with pneumonia, surrounded by family. Thomas was born on August 3rd, 1936 to James and Doris Spurgeon in Indiana, but soon relocated to Baltimore with his family.
After graduating from Polytechnic Institute School in 1957, he then enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving three years from 1958-1961. After proudly serving his country, he returned home and received a mechanical degree in the Drafting Arts from Maryland Institute College of Art in 1964. Following, Thomas had a long successful thirty one year career with the State of Maryland as a supervisor in the property/soil maps division receiving numerous awards along the way. Soon after Tom retired from his career with the state, he worked part-time for three years as an usher at the then newly opened Oriole Park at Camden Yards.
Thomas was married to Ms. Sharon Joy for approximately 10 years and that marriage produced two children, Patrick and Michael. He helped raise his step-daughter Lisa Metz Prough.
Thomas was a very caring, patient, understanding, quiet and loving man. He was always helpful, rarely said no, a generous, sweet soul who loved his family dearly. Although he was raised in a family/generation that didn't say or express their love often, in his later years he surely loved to say "love you too" all the time.
Tom had many interests such as bowling and sports. He was an excellent chess player, and a very good basketball player and his father coached many of his teams growing up in Uplands. Tom had a very competitive personality, loved playing poker machines, live poker or any card games. He also, loved watching his grandson, Brayden, play baseball. He had a passion for rooting for his favorite local professional sports teams as well, such as the Orioles, the Colts and of course, the Ravens.
Thomas is predeceased by his parents, James and Doris Spurgeon, and his older brother Roger L. Spurgeon, Sr. He is survived by his son Patrick and fiancé Jeanne Cooper and his son Michael and wife Christy. Also survived by his grandchildren Ashleigh, Brayden, and Brynn.
The family requests that any donations be made in honor of Thomas to the American Legion Dewey Lowman Post 109, 1610 Old Sulphur Spring Rd., Halethorpe, MD 21227.
There will be a memorial gathering from 9:30-11:30am and memorial service from 11:30-12:30 on Saturday, January 28th, 2023 at Ambrose Funeral Home, 1328 Sulphur Spring Rd., Halethorpe, MD 21227, with his burial immediately following at Crest Lawn Memorial Gardens in Marriottsville, Maryland.
