Thomas Wellen Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Slattery Funeral Home - Marlborough on May 29, 2025.
Thomas "Tom" Wellen 73, of Marlboro, MA passed away on May 24th with his family by his side.
Tom is survived by his loving wife Kathleen Clifford Wellen and their children Julie Gianotti (Michael) of Billerica MA, Michael Clifford (Katherine) of Norwell MA, Norman Wellen (Samantha) of Framingham MA, Kristin Apperson (the self-anointed favorite) of North Beach MD and Patrick Wellen of Worcester MA. Tom also leaves behind 6 beloved grandchildren: Colin, Gavin, Mazzie, Nora, Ethan & Wyatt and 2 honorary grandchildren Sierra & Liberty.
Tom is preceded in death by his father, Norman Wellen, the oldest of eleven, and his mother, Elinor Byrne, the oldest of seven, both of Marlboro. He is survived by three sisters, Norma Baker of Parrish FL, Claire Rea of Port Charlotte FL and Jane Maloney of Falmouth MA. Besides his many aunts and uncles, he suffered 54 first cousins.
Tom lived most of his life in Marlboro, relocating abruptly to Florida in the mid-seventies but returning 10 years later when the local warrants expired. His community involvement included St. Mary's Credit Union, the Metro West Boys and Girls Club, the Chamber of Commerce and various youth sports programs.
Tom was an avid sailor having sailed several thousands of hours along the east coasts of Canada, the United States and throughout the Caribbean. While he was on one extended offshore adventure, he was caught in a lengthy meteorite storm. After the storm finally subsided, he realized he had acquired several superpowers which he later used in a secondary career as an anonymous crime fighter. He eventually had to quit his secret life of crime fighting after developing a rare acute reaction to spandex. The condition was so severe that it led to his eventual demise.
A celebration of life will be held on Sunday June 29th from 2-4 PM at Slattery Funeral Home in Marlboro MA.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Tom's memory to UMass Memorial Cancer Center of Excellence, please see link below.

Kate, sorry for your loss and I am happy to have shared quilting moments with the two of you. I always left my quilts in Tom's hands to pick the right thread color for each quilt that he stitched for me. He will be greatly missed as I see by many who have been touched by his life...Justine Eden

My sincere condolences to all the family of Tom Wellen. I knew Tom from our years at St A´s and was in a number of classes with him as an Eco and Business major. He was a nice guy and I enjoyed the time I spent with him at the college. May he rest in eternal peace and happiness.
