Timothy Getchell Obituary

Published by Star Tribune from Nov. 25 to Nov. 27, 2005.
Getchell, Timothy David "Judge" May 5, 1964- November 23, 2005 Survived by his beloved wife, Anna; his parents, Nancene and Dick; brother, Chris (Christa); nephew, Padraic; niece, Grace; aunt, Bev; and many other aunts, uncles, cousins and a host of friends. Tim was raised in the White Bear Lake-Stillwater area and currently lived in Vadnais Heights. He graduated from Minnehaha Academy and from the University of Minnesota, where he was a member of SAE fraternity. Tim's many talents included music (eleven years of piano lessons starting at age six, classical guitar and percussion) some rock bands, and 1000 plus CD collection. His sense of humor started early in life. Acting lessons at Lakeshore Players at age six led to writing and acting classes at Dudley Riggs Theater. Both Tim and Anna had a special love of roller coasters and traveled the country for the thrill ride. He kept a diary of his up and down battle with cancer on the Caring Bridge website where 30,000 hits over the past year gave everyone a glimpse of his courage and humor. The family thanks the nursing staff at St. John's Hospital and the Cancer Center for their loving care of Tim this past year, and to Dr. Johnson and Dr. Petryk for their medical contributions. Celebration of Life Service will be held Monday, 2 PM at OUR SAVIOR'S LUTHERAN CHURCH, 1616 W. Olive St., Stillwater. Visitation Sunday, 4-7 PM at BRADSHAW CELEBRATION OF LIFE CENTER, 2800 Curve Crest Blvd., (NW Corner of Hwy 36 & Cty Rd 5) and one hour prior to service at church. Memorials preferred to Minnehaha Academy, Minneapolis, or the Caring Bridge website. Bradshaw 2800 Curve Crest Blvd., Stillwater 651-439-5511

Dear Getchell Family,

My name is James Lovick. I worked with Judge for a number of years at Qwest. I also played pool with him for a year on Tuesday night's at Geraldines. I left Qwest in 2003 and lost touch with Judge. I just found out about his passing tonight. I am deeply saddened. He was a kind spirit that touched many people around him. He made us laugh constantly at work and play. My favorite memory was the time I went to his house for the Frank Sinatra party. He told me I hadn't lived until I had been to one. It was hilarious. I will always keep him in my memories with a smile on my face. God Bless you and your family. He will be missed.

Dearest Getchell Family,

Tim's dad, Dick, and I were at the U together, and years later, your extraordinary Tim was my favorite waiter at a Galtier Plaza cafe, when I came in for lunch from Channel 2. He gave me an audio tape of his band, which I ran across last week, and for my 40th high school reunion in Glencoe, he loaned me a huge box of precious music from the 50s. Whatta great guy! My heart hurts for your family and the loss of Tim's special presence in this world.

"But the soul of him, the the glowing, gorgeous, fervent soul of him, surely is shining in eager joy upon some other dawn." -- William White

Warmest blessings with all my heart.

To Tim's parents and his wife: I went to 6th/7th grade with Tim (@ Mahtomedi) and we used to be neighbors growing up. Tim - this was apparently before he was "Judge" - and I had a tree fort in the woods down the hill by the ponds before they built all the houses back there. Of course it was not for his building prowess we had the fort as I found out quickly that he could not really hammer a nail "properly" back then - being a lefty?! I'm really sad to hear about his passing but I am really glad to hear he was so cool as an adult because he was a really special person when he was young(er) and in fact I have thought about him from time to time. Also I am glad to see all the cats, as I ended up with 6 myself at this point and this certainly says a lot about someone's character. I wish you and your family the best.

Anna I am so sorry to hear about Judge's passing.

One never knows when our time will be over on earth. It reinforces that we need to make each day count.

I hope you and Judge made many happy memories and those memories will help you in the days and years ahead.

I will always remember his wit and how he would publish these fake Qwest news publications. They would always be good for a daily laugh.

My thoughts and prayers will be with you, Judge's family and all his friends at this difficult time.

Dear Anna,

I was so saddened to learn about Judge's passing. I worked next to him at the time he (and you) borrowed my digital camera to take on one of your exciting roller coaster trips. I'm so thankful to have known Tim and to have lent some opportunity for you two to have fun. I enjoyed the pictures when he showed them to me. I also know personally of cancer struggles. I hope you remember me when we were all seated in the waiting room at Maplewood Cancer Treatment Center for our seperate cancer therapies. It was a trying time. Cancer does have it's gifts, however; it taught me, and I'm sure Tim as well, to accept love and care from so many people. To know people loved Tim so much, will I'm sure, give you strength to carry you through your grief. May your comfort not only come from your family and friends, but from God above, who grants all our peace.

With loving memory,

Dear Dick and Nancene and Family,

We are so sorry to learn that Tim lost his battle with cancer. No matter the cause, losing a close family member challenges and rocks our very faith and sense of being. Trite but true, we expect to die before our children.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you as you grieve Tim's loss and celebrate his life. Take comfort in his freedom from suffering and in your faith that you will see him again in heaven.

All our best,
