A True Gentleman and loved the game of baseball with all his heart. It was a pleasure I met him at Shea Stadium. I will never foget his kindness when he gave me a signed baseball in the 7th inning stretch. We talked baseball through out the game & I told him Casey was my favorite. God Bless you Tommy!!! Your dad had seen me pitch when I was 21 years old. He invited me to spring training in Florida. When I got there he said he was so sorry but he couldn't add any players that didn't have a contract. As we sat there for a while, I saw a worried look on his face and asked what's wrong. He said he thought his daughter joined a cult. Since I had recently gone through the same experience at home, I assured him that you hadn't, and like my mom and myself you would see that the basic beliefs of Christianity were the the same. He thanked me and you could see the expression on his face change. I thought you might like to hear that story. I would love to talk to you further to hear your side of the story. [email protected]
I pray that the peace of God that passes all understanding continues to guard your heart

I had the great privilege of meeting Tommy Holmes at a card show in 1994. I addressed him as Mr. Holmes as I had been taught to when I was young to address elders, as a sign of respect. He said "it's Tommy". We spoke for about 30 minutes about hitting, with him doing most of the talking. To say that I was enthralled would be an understatement. later I was wandering around looking at some of the Vendors exhibits, one of hich happened to be a "Tommy Holmes" autographed ball. He came up behind me, put his arm around my shoulder, and said, "Tommy Holmes, who's he?"

I had the pleasure of meeting Tommy on a
baseball river cruise in the late 90's. He
was a gentleman and a delight to meet. He
had been a hero of mine in my childhood.

My first big league ball game was at Braves Field the year they installed lights. I later met Tommy at a Boston Braves Reunion. A pryaer I have said at many a wake and funeral ---
"Lord, we give him back to you who first gave him to us. And as you did not lose him in the giving, so we do not lose him in the return. For what is yours is ours also if we belong to you. Life is unending and love is undying. Lift us up strong Son of God, that we may see further. Cleanse our eyes that we may see more clearly. And prepare a place for us in heaven that we may be with those we love and with you, our Lord and Savior. Amen.

Besides his 37 consecutive game hitting streak, Tommy also was the majors' hardest hitter to strike out (three years running) plus was the major league's reigning Iron Man when from July 30, 1943 to July 13, 1946 he played in 454 straight games (per the book Iron Men of Baseball). These feats alone prove that Tommy was an outstanding and dedicated ball player. My prayers go out to the Holmes family during this time of grief and remembrance.

Tommy Holmes singled in the '48 World Series off of Bob Feller after the pickoff throw to Lou Boudreau on Phil Masi was ruled safe...Meeting Tommy Holmes at Braves Reunions, we had a chance to talk about the game, that play and the umpire who made the Call, Bill Stewart, our Grandfather...God Bless Tommy Holmes and may he slide safely into God's arms as he rounds third and heads for home...

Tommy's record was one of the statistics we kids all talked about when I was a little-leaguer growing up in the '50's...before the days of Pete Rose. May Tommy rest in peace. God bless all in his family.
