Tommy Roman Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 11, 2014.
Tommy Roman of Westminster California passed away Saturday January 11, 2014 at home surrounded by his loving and devoted family. Tommy is survived by his wife of 45 years Sandra and his three children Candace Maciel, married to Ray Maciel, Joleen Harris and Thomas Roman III. He leaves behind 6 grandchildren. These Grandchildren, Camille Maciel, Carrina Maciel, Ryan Maciel, Jordan Harris, Roman Harris and Aiden Roman, were Tommy's pride and joy. Tommy is also survived by his 5 remaining siblings Helen Vargas, Virginia Bustamante, David Roman, Alex Roman, and Richard Roman. Tommy was born in Artesia, California on August 24, 1946 to Thomas and Josephine Roman. He lived a happy childhood on a ranch in Cottonwood, California. He attended Cottonwood Elementary and Anderson High School where he excelled in Math and his favorite sport Basketball. He was drafted to the Army in 1968 and served 2 years in Vietnam and Korea as a Medic. He was proud of his service. Upon his discharge from the service, he married his high school sweetheart Sandra Merkle and started a family in Anderson, California. He moved to Bellflower, California to be close to his parents, in 1976. Tommy became an operating engineer specializing in paving and grading. He raised his children in Westminster California where he was heavily involved in coaching softball and baseball. He co founded the Goldenwest Bobby Sox softball league. Once his girls graduated high school and moved on to college, he changed hats and started coaching his son in the local Westminster Little League. He never stopped coaching even when his children grew up because before long, his grandchildren would be of age to learn a thing or two. As soon as they could hold a bat or pick up a basketball, he was sharing his knowledge and love of the game. Even in his final hours he was coaching up his grandbabies to not loose their passion for the game just because he was no longer around. He taught them to believe in themselves and follow their dreams. Tommy lost his battle with cancer and diabetes at the young age of 67. He will truly be missed by all who knew him.
